Media) Competence Descriptions:
Pre-1999 Undergraduate Program
1999 Undergraduate Program
You are to choose this media form and submit your choice to the instructor by the second week of class by email. Title the email "HC-D/H2G Media Focus", and write a paragraph describing what form of media you've chosen and why it is an interest to you. During the quarter, you are to monitor and capture as many examples of class themes as possible from that medium using video or audio tape, collecting newspapers or magazines, photography or electronic means. The messages presented in these examples will
be used to share with others in your group and for your final project.
During your group discussion, try to relate the issues discussed to your
chosen media source. In addition to observing your media source directly,
use the Internet to research the medium as well. There are many media
links on the course links page. All media outlets have a strong presence
on the Internet and many media sources critique each other, such as magazines
writing about the music industry or TV covering movies. Top
HC-D/H2G Competence Demonstration: Students have two options for their final projects for the HC-D/H2G competence. By the fifth week of class, each student must choose one of the following options and notify the instructor which option has been chosen. To do so, answer the questions listed in the "proposal" section of the assignment below and send them via email by the fifth week of class. Title the email "HC-D/H2G Project Proposal". It is strongly suggested that you read and consider each of the options below in the first week of the course so that you can think about them for several weeks before decide. Email any questions to the instructor. HC-D/H2G Option A) Students choosing this option are to create a portfolio of the messages and images that they have collected throughout the quarter that demonstrate course themes and the online discussion questions and should have a main theme represented throughout the portfolio. Students may use any format for this portfolio including video or audio tape (not to exceed 10 minutes), collections of papers or magazines, photography or electronic means such as Powerpoint or web pages. These projects are to be submitted to the instructor at the Loop campus in the last week of class or sent via email. Each example presented must be accompanied
by several paragraphs that explain what the image is and the course concept
it illustrates. The portfolio should include images to represent
the models presented to describe gender attitudes; health and physical
development background; experience with emotions and mental health; experience
with relationships including friends, partners, parents and family; cultural
influences; attitudes about work, violence and sexuality; and acceptance
of changing roles of masculinity.

HC-D/H2G Option B)
You are then to compare and contrast your observations and findings to those of the person you interviewed in a 7-10 page paper and submit to the instructor by email in week ten. HC-D/H2G Option A Proposal Questions:
HC-D/H2G Online Discussion: The general nature of online discussion for this competence group will be to share media images and messages that correspond to the weekly themes and learning objectives for the course. Your contribution to the newsgroups should relate to general themes and relate what you have found in researching and observing the particular form of media you have chosen. Students are to begin with the discussion questions listed in that week's message from the instructor and can use the discussion groups to discuss any issues related to their assignments, the readings or issues related to them. Access to the discussion group can be gained from the "Course Activities Main Menu" page or can be bookmarked for later access. The link titled, "Direct Access to Blackboard Discussion Groups," will take you to the DePaul Blackboard course management tool. For more information about the "Blackboard" system, consult the "General Activities" page. Students are to review the procedures, protocol
and grading for participation in their online discussion group before getting
started. These issues will be discussed in the formal course meeting
the first week of class. Top
