Re: Emergency Cancellation of Classes / Closure of the
University
Each year the University issues a set of contingency
procedures to be followed should a severe winter storm, or
another reason, force us to cancel classes or close the
University. All of us should be aware of the procedures to cancel
classes or close the University.
How to Determine if DePaul Closes or Cancels Classes
Should a decision to cancel or close be made after working
hours or over a weekend, the University will rely on the media to
inform all employees. A recorded message will also be placed on
the University's telephone system, (312) 362-8000. Calls to this
number are discouraged because the volume of calls can
over-burden the system.
Specific departments may be telephoned and a voice mail message
should indicate the status of classes.
The office of University Relations will notify the Chicago
Emergency Closing Center of any emergency closing or
cancellation. The following radio and television stations
announce all school cancellations and closings: WMAQ (670 AM),
WGN (720 AM), WBBM (780 AM), WBBM (96.3 FM), WUSN (99.5 FM),
WFLD-TV (32).
A decision made at night affecting operations the next day will
be announced as early as possible so persons can plan
accordingly. If no announcement is made by approximately 6:00
a.m., one may safely assume that DePaul is OPEN.
If, during 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., a decision is made to cancel
classes for that evening or for the next day, or to close the
University, the President will notify the deans and university
officers, who will handle the notification of all faculty, staff,
and students. Area radio and TV stations will also be informed
immediately.
I appreciate the cooperation of all university personnel.
Thank you.
