The
American Humanics certificate program at DePaul entails taking six
courses across the university. The certificate program is a nationally
recognized program sponsored by over forty universities and twenty nonprofit
organizations. It is professional
recognition that the holder is prepared for a career in nonprofit management.
The
basic requirements for the certificate include (a) six four-credit hour
courses that focus on the foundation and professional competencies of a
nonprofit manager, (b) a 300 hour internship (some are paid) with one or more
organizations to develop and practice your nonprofit management skills, and (c)
participation with the national American Humanics organization through local
chapter activities and national conferences.
The certificate is only awarded by the American Humanics national office
upon graduation with a bachelor's degree.
The
courses:
American Humanics recognizes that nonprofit management is more than a set
of job skills. As a result, a
series of personal development foundations underlie the certificate.
These are akin to the liberal studies requirements for undergraduate
students at DePaul University. In
addition, one course (MPS 200) covers the professional management basic skills
that American Humanics emphasizes for success in the nonprofit world.
The course is offered at DePaul during the Winter Quarter 2002 on the
Lincoln Park campus, from 10:00 to 11:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
MPS
200 - American Humanics: Managing Nonprofit Organizations
(4 credit hours)
The
course covers the management techniques, effective decision-making, team
building, budgeting, managing people, improving program delivery, and how to
work with a board. It includes
administering volunteer service programs and fundraising. This serves as the
basic course in the American Humanics certificate program.
MPS
395 - Internship for American Humanics Certificate
(4 credit hours)
The
learning objective of this course is for the student to gain first-hand
practical knowledge of operational aspects of a nonprofit organization.
The student chooses a nonprofit organization to intern approved by the
Acting Director of the American Humanics Program.
Satisfactory completion of this course provides credit for 100 hours of
internship and provides structure for the remaining 200 hours for the total 300
hour internship component required by the American Humanics certification.
