IT223 Course Grading
I have entered (on COL) two new grade items. They are called "Score 1" and "Grade 1".
Sometime shortly after May 30, both Score 1 and Grade 1 will be computed and posted.
Score 1 = 0.6154*HwAvg + 0.3846*Midterm. Where, HwAvg is the average score that you
received on your highest six homework assignments (out of seven), and Midterm is the
score you received on the midterm exam (see note 1, below). To get Grade 1, you take
your Score 1 and look it up in the table:
Points Grade Points Grade
93 - 100 A 73 - 76 C
90 - 92 A- 70 - 72 C-
87 - 89 B+ 67 - 69 D+
83 - 86 B 60 - 66 D
80 - 82 B- < 60 F
77 - 79 C+
This is the table given in the course syllabus.
Grade 1 will be the grade you receive in the course if you do NOT take the final exam.
If you take the final exam, then your course grade will be based on your Score 2 =
0.4*HwAvg + 0.25*Midterm + 0.35*Final. The decision as to whether or not you take the
final exam, is entirely up to you. And, yes, Score 2 could turn out to be less than Score 1,
so taking the final exam could result in a lower grade than you would have got had you not
taken the final exam.
Final notes.
(1) The computation for Score 1 is based on distributing the 35% that would have been
used for the final exam, proportionally over the homework and midterm exam.
Namely, Score 1 = 100*(0.4*HwAvg + 0.25*Midterm)/65.
(2) The late date for submitting Homework 7 is Tuesday, May 30.
(3) If you do Homework 8, it must be submitted no later than Tuesday, May 30.
(4) Other than the homework assignments, the midterm exam, and (optionally) the final
exam, there is nothing more that will be counted in computing your course grade.
(5) This grading policy applies equally to both the DL section and the Live section.
(6) Please notify me (by email) of your intentions regarding taking the final exam.
Do this no later than Sunday, June 4. A simple, "Yes, I plan to take the final exam",
or "No, I won't be taking the final exam," will due.
(7) Our final exam date, time, and place is:
Tuesday, June 6, 6pm - 9pm, CTI 216
