The Protocols used for tunneling are follows
- PPTP
This is the most widely used tunneling protocol. PPTP stands for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol.
PPTP was developed by 3Com and Microsoft. For More information can be found at

- L2TP
L2TP is the layer tunneling. more info is obtained from RFC 2661
- NTS-TP (SuperTunnel) tunneling protocols.
This is a properatory protocol by
NTS
- VTP
Another properatory protocol by 3Com
- IpSec
The IPsec protocol is defined by a large number of
standards and recommendations that are codified by the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF). There are many versions of IETF
standards and recommendation. Some of the protocols used in IPsec are full IETF standards;
however, the others are still in draft form. The more information can be found at

IPsec is expected to be dominant in the near future.
