Introduction
Quantum leaps in recent computer processing power has made image manipulation possible on relatively small computers. The goal of this manipulation can be divided into three categories:
image processing, image analysis and image understanding. I will concentrate on image processing and expand to image analysis and image understanding as time permits.

Image Processing Applications
Applications of digital image processing have experienced vigorous growth in diverse areas such as fingerprint identification, human face recognition, medical image processing, detection of defects in machine parts and many others.
