• RPC -- Supports other technologies

• Microsoft: DCOM Dominant platform.Through 1997 -- very hard to use, almost no documentation. COM --Active/X in strong use.

• OMG: CORBA Widely supported in theory. Language and platform independent.

• Sun: Java RMI. Platform independent. Language restricted. True object model. Easy to use.

• DCE rpc-based, interoperable, not OO, low-level
