Course Objectives:

This course is designed to be highly interactive. While there will be some lecture, class time will be devoted to in-class activities, discussion, and demonstrations. Please make every effort to be at each class and to be prepared to discuss the material for the week.

Attendance

Attendance for this course will be taken at the beginning of class each day. Although attendance is not a separate part of your grade, coming to class will affect your final course grade as follows:

0 absences (100%) = +5%
1 absence (90%) = +3%
2-3 absences (70-80%) = same grade
4 absences (60%) = -3%
5 or more (50% or less)= -5%

At the instructor's discretion and with verifiable, written excuses, a student who misses more than 5 classes may not have points deduced. However, regardless of reason, the student is no longer eligible for extra credit. Note that students coming more than 10 minutes late may be counted as absent.

Assignments

Assignments will consist of a number of in class (e.g., labs) and take home assignments. All of these are designed to increase your understanding of research concepts and methods. Homework assignments are due at the BEGINNING of class. If you arrive late to class your homework assignment will receive a 20% penalty. This is to discourage students from arriving late to class in order to finish homework assignments. ABSOLUTELY NO homework assignments will be accepted after the class period in which they are due, and in-class assignments cannot be handed in if you do not attend the class. Extra credit assignments can be used to make up missed assignment points.

Exams

There will be two exams during the quarter - one midterm and one final. Exams are comprehensive, closed book, and closed notes. Absolutely no make-up exams for the midterm will be given. If you have a verifiable, written excuse for missing the midterm, your final grade will count as your full exam grade. If you miss the final, and have a verifiable, written excuse, we will reschedule your exam as soon as possible in next quarter.

Extra Credit

Extra credit projects will be available to all students throughout the quarter. If you miss an assignment or quiz, do not panic - these projects can be used to make up the points. Completion of these projects/assignments is NOT mandatory. As with class assignments, extra credit projects received after the due date will not be accepted. In addition, I will not accept extra credit projects which are based upon in-class activities in which the student did not participate (e.g., in the event of an absence).

Academic Dishonesty

Work in this class must adhere to DePaul's Academic Integrity Policy as outlined in the Student Handbook. Please review the policy as well as the Academic Integrity Disciplinary Procedures.

Cheating will result in a grade of F for that assignment or exam (at a minimum). Plagarism, like cheating, is a form of academic dishonesty, and it carries the same penalities. Plagarism may be blatant (directly copying someone else's paper) or it may be the result of carelessness (not citing an author's work properly). If you have any questions about properly citing work, please contact the instructor.

The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus or schedule. Please check Blackboard or this web page regularly for announcements.
