Stereotype Essay
Stereotype Essay

I was immediately intrigued about this topic when one of my classmates brought it up in discussion. I figured it would not be very difficult to write in a week since it was mostly a narrative piece. I’ve heard many times, “write what you know”, so I figured I know myself pretty well, this should be fairly manageable. We discussed in class how to write to be taken seriously when writing about our specific topics. Initially, with this paper, I was a bit lost on how to be taken seriously but then as a class we concluded that for the stereotype essay, one would have to take in account why and why not stereotypes are true. So that is exactly what I did.
I wrote my essay and had my roommate Chloe read it over. She gave me some useful feedback to add some ethos so I was not just rambling on about myself for 1000 words. It was then I had a lightbulb moment to include the idea of schema and schemata influence. I remember learning about schemas in psychology last year and felt they were a great, logical way of explaining why we as humans stereotype. So to my final I added a reference to wikipedia’s page about schemas and connected them to stereotypes.
When I stereotyped myself as the “popular girl” I included most of the typical views of these kind of girls. I addressed 3 different aspects of the stereotype and discussed how they were and were not true. Overall, I think this was an effective narrative addressing how I have been stereotyped throughout my life and why it is or is not correct.
