SE 477: Software and Systems Project Management
Assignment 2, Due: January 25, 2017
Assignment: Discuss the integration of the Iterative/Evolutionary Process with Project Management
- Description Ð write a one- to two-page critical analysis that directly addresses the question posed: "Show how the Iterative/Evolutionary Process can be integrated with project management."
- Motivation Ð understand the iterative/evolutionary process and how it works, and how to manage such a project.
1. Reading
- Read the following two Gartner Reports, available on the DePaul Libraries Web site:
- Waterfalls, Products and Projects: A Primer to Software Development Methods by Matthew Hotle (Gartner document ID: G00155147) [Note: a copy of this report has been loaded on D2L > Documents to save you the effort.]
- 'Just Enough Process' for Applications by Matthew Hotle (Gartner document ID: G00145561) [Note: a copy of this report has been loaded on D2L > Documents to save you the effort.]

2. Files
- HW2Template MS Word document template.
3. Assignment: Critical Analysis: "Show how the Iterative/Evolutionary Process can be integrated with Project Management"
We have discussed very briefly the waterfall software development process/life-cycle and more extensively discussed the iterative/evolutionary software development process/life-cycle. WeÕve also discussed the basic structure of the project management life-cycle. Your assignment is to write a one- to two-page critical analysis that directly addresses the question posed at the top of this section: "Show how the Iterative/Evolutionary Process can be integrated with project management." Essentially, you will state your educated, considered opinion on using the iterative/evolutionary process as the SDLC for project management integration. The purpose of the assignment is to show how to integrate the Project Management with the Iterative/Evolutionary Process. Note: I do not want a discussion of Waterfall vs. Iterative!
Hints:
- Use Waterfalls, Products and Projects: A Primer to Software Development Methods to identify common and differing characteristics between the two SDLCs and the characteristics of project management processes we discussed in SE 477 lecture 2.
- Use 'Just Enough Process' for Applications to provide you with more insight into strengths and limitations of the two SDLCs.
- Look at slides 45-51, 92-96 of lecture 2.
- Read Krutchen.
- Review PMBOK-SWE Ch. 2.4.2.3
- Planning in the iterative development model needs to take into consideration the iteration; consider each iteration as a separate project.
- Discuss how to integrate PM into the Iterative/Evolutionary SDLC Process. I am looking for how the Project Life Cycle works with the Iterative/Evolutionary SDLC.
Deliverable Requirements: The submission should have your name, date and assignment title on the front page. Use headers and footers, and have your name and title on each page.
- Layout and format. The layout and format for the assignment are defined in the HW2Template MS Word document template. Use the template.
- Analysis. Provides a discussion on how to integrate PM and the Iterative/Evolutionary SDLC Process. See above for additional information.
