MULTIGROOVINATION AT COLLEGES AND FESTIVALS

FLIPPOMUSIC'S program of "globaljazz" presents a kaleidoscopic musical experience drawing on musical styles from around the world--original and traditional music from South America to Africa, the Orient to the Middle East. Using a blend of authentic percussion and wind instruments and synthesized sounds, FLIPPOMUSIC has been praised for its "...unique and exotic sound..." (Chicago Tribune).

FLIPPOMUSIC has performed in a wide variety of settings. The band has played in concert spaces and recital halls, jammed in the open air for hundreds of festival-goers and performed in more intimate coffeehouse setting.

Flippomusic is composed of some of Chicago's most eclectic and talented musicians. All are veteran jazz performers who also have a knowledge and love of world music. Principal composer and keyboardist David Flippo draws upon the skills, knowledge and experience he gained while obtaining a Doctorate in Composition at the University of Michigan, studying world music and working as a jazz performer and composer. While studying for his Master of Music in Composition at Eastman School of Music he took advantage of the school's fine ethnomusicology program and befriended musicians from all over the world.

Bassist Donn DeSanto plays both electric and acoustic basses and uses his eclectic experience to drive the band through its many grooves. Wind player Dan Hesler, who has worked in contemporary jazz ensembles and reggae bands, relishes the exotic scales of other cultures. Drummer Heath Chappell doubles as a percussionist on his arsenal of ethnic instruments. Percussionist Aras Biskis adds authentic colors and grooves to Flippomusic's sound while performing on percussion instruments from all over the world.
