THE PLAYERS:
Flippomusic is composed of some of Chicago's most eclectic and talented musicians. All
are veteran jazz performers who also have a knowledge and love of world music. Principal
composer and keyboardist David Flippo draws upon the skills, knowledge and
experience he gained while obtaining a Doctorate in Composition at the University of
Michigan, studying world music and working as a jazz performer and composer. While
studying for his Master of Music in Composition at Eastman School of Music he took
advantage of the school's fine ethnomusicology program and befriended musicians from all
over the world. He has also performed contemporary concert music--both written and
improvised--with U. M.'s Contemporary Directions Ensemble, Eastman's Musica Nova
and Chicago's Ethos Chamber Orchestra. Flippo is also a member of Pong Unit,
which performs regularly with Mark Smith's Green Mill
Poetry Slam.
Bassist Donn DeSanto plays both electric and acoustic bass and uses his eclectic
experience to many moods and grooves of the band. He teaches string bass at Chicago State
University and has a Bachelors Degree in jazz studies from DePaul University.
Wind player Dan Hesler, who has worked in contemporary jazz ensembles and reggae
bands, relishes the exotic scales of other cultures and provides a maniacal energy to the
ensemble on soprano, tenor saxophones, flute and piccolo.
Drummer Heath Chappell doubles as a percussionist on his arsenal of ethnic
instruments and is also a member of Suenos, The New Invaders, Al Rose, Barry Sperti's
Caravan, Mark Smith's and Pong Unit, Midway Ramblers, Mothra and the "Famous
Pizza Gig Ensemble" at Bacino's. He has a Bachelors of Music fro the University
of Miami.
Percussionist Aras Biskis adds authentic colors and grooves to Flippomusic's sound
while performing on percussion instruments from all over the world. Aris's wonderful
fluidity and concentrated energy inspires all who plays with him. He is an original member
of the Boston based ensemble Mother Tongue.
The band is also often joined by Winston Damen ("Stone") on percussion who also
lead his own ensemble Ulele.
