Risk Management:
(Copied from the Delta Sigma Pi Risk Management
Policy, 40th edition of the Manual for Pledge Education)
Introduction
The following risk management policy is intended to
assist Delta Sigma Pi in reducing the exposure of the Fraternity to risk by
taking actions designed to reduce the risk of acting in a negligent manner. It
has been drafted after consultation with a wide variety of persons including
attorneys, insurance brokers, staff executives of other fraternities and
sororities and the volunteer leaders of Delta Sigma Pi.
Delta Sigma Pi is, above all else, a fraternity
which bands together students and alumni with a common interest in the field of
business. It is the professional nature of our Fraternity of which we are all
most proud but, the fact that we are a fraternity presents societal concerns
which we must face in a proactive rather than a reactive manner. We must
evaluate our actions in each of these areas and be prepared to take positive and
responsible actions to prevent negligence.
This policy is not a substitute for individual
responsibility by all members of Delta Sigma Pi. This Risk Management Policy
supersedes all previous policy statements in these areas and applies to all
units of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi including collegiate and
alumni chapters and house corporations. All pledge activities shall be in
compliance with this policy.
Alcohol and Drugs
The Fraternity will take reasonable and good faith
measures to assure that our Brothers and our guests abide by law and policy and
that our actions reflect in a positive way on ourselves and on our Fraternity.
As stated earlier, none of these actions can provide an adequate substitute for
personal responsibility for risk on the part of those who opt to consume or to
provide alcoholic beverages.
1. The possession, use and/or consumption of
alcoholic beverages, while on chapter premises; during any Fraternity event
whether local, regional, provincial, national or international in scope, or in
any situation sponsored or endorsed by any chapter or by the Fraternity, must be
in compliance with any and all applicable laws of the state, province, county,
city, college and university.
2. No alcoholic beverages may be purchased using
chapter, pledge class or Fraternity funds nor may the purchase of alcoholic
beverages for members, pledges or guests be undertaken or coordinated by anyone
in the name of or on behalf of the chapter.
3. The possession, sales and/or use of any illegal
drug or controlled substance at any Fraternity event or on chapter premises is
prohibited. The legal use of a prescribed drug is permissible.
4. No chapter may co-sponsor an event where alcohol
is purchased by any host chapter, group or organization that does not comply
with this policy.
5. Open Fraternity sponsored parties where alcohol
is present are prohibited. Open parties are those events at which non-members
are provided unrestricted access without specific invitation.
6. When alcohol is served at Fraternity events, one
of the following options for conducting the event must be followed:
A. Service of alcohol on a no host, cash bar
basis by a professional bartender, fully covered by liability insurance is
preferred, or;
B. A Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB) event may be
held at which only members, pledges and invited guests of legal drinking age
may bring and consume alcoholic beverages.
7. Regardless of the option chosen, the following
general provisions shall apply:
A. No member or pledge, individually or
collectively, shall purchase for, serve to, or sell alcoholic beverages to any
minor (those under the legal drinking age).
B. Reasonable precautions will be taken by the
chapter to prevent the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages and to
prevent the service of alcohol to underage persons by anyone.
C. Members and/or guests who arrive at an event
in an intoxicated state shall not be admitted.
D. At each event, there shall be designated
non-drinking members.
E. Non-alcoholic beverages shall be provided at
each event.
F. The service of alcoholic beverages shall be
cut off at a specific time which shall be established and clearly published in
advance of the event.
G. No "drinking games" shall be
permitted.
H. Kegs, party balls, quarter barrels, or any
type of community alcohol shall not be permitted unless controlled by a
professional bartender, fully covered by liability insurance, on a cash bar,
no host basis.
I. No event shall be planned or promoted under
the name of Delta Sigma Pi which is for the main purpose of consuming
continued amounts of alcohol. For example: Pub crawls, progressive drinking
parties or progressive themes, bar hopping events or competitive games
involving alcohol (drinking Olympics).
