Writing in Sociology

Before beginning any sociology paper, I would recommend doing some research to get an idea of what kind of studies have been done in a topic that you are potentially interested in. (You may find yourself changing your topic as you proceed through the paper, which is almost expected, so do not worry!)

Writing assignments in sociology classes primarily consist of combining sociological theorists and/or concepts with supporting literature of that particular topic.  If you are writing a research proposal, that will necessitate a working hypothesis and methodology section as well.

Research proposals generally will also contain the different debates going on within the particular topic that you are addressing.  For example, the ongoing debate on family structure and its consequences on children:  are children better off with the traditional nuclear family with a mother and father?  Some research suggests yes, and other research suggests not.  You would need to address all sides of the debate.  Good luck!
