When I took my first philosophy
class, the hardest thing for me to get
used to was writing exegeses. The idea
of writing about a text and not being
able to include my own arguments was frustrating!
However, I learned through practice that
sitting down, reading every single word
on the page, and trying to rephrase it
in my own (and most importantly, unbiased)
words forced me to learn and analyze everything
on that page. Exegeses are humbling exercises,
but they’re also very useful. Remember,
you can argue with Plato later; first
you've got to figure out what he’s
saying!
