Academic writing is not the same in every field -- historians write differently from literary critics, and biologists write differently than financial analysts. Since you do an extensive amount of writing in all of your courses throughout your college careers, it is important for you to realize how voice, audience, and purpose change across academic disciplines.

This section attempts to answer the following questions with anecdotes, examples, and links to other helpful resources:

  • How and why do students write differently in each of their courses?
  • What do the professors and audiences in these fields expect in student writing?
  • What writing skills do students need to succeed in writing papers for all of their courses, not just English?
  • What are assignments like in these fields? What writing styles and formats do students use?
