center for writing-based learning - home

The Center for Writing offers in-person and online assistance for DePaul students, faculty, and staff. We have begun using WCOnline for scheduling face-to-face appointments. Emailed papers are still submitted via the form on this website, and instant messenger/webcam appointment requests are sent directly through the IM/Webcam page. Although we encourage writers to schedule appointments in advance --either online, in-person, or by phone -- we also offer walk-in appointments if time is available.

Writers may schedule up to three appointments or send up to three papers online per week total, regardless of the campus. Appointments can be scheduled for thirty or fifty minutes.

Faculty members can also request a presentation, in which an experienced writing consultant will visit your class to explain the services available at the Center for Writing.

Appointment Types

  • Standing Appointments: Writers may schedule regular weekly appointments for a set period of time, up to the end of the quarter. These appointments enable writers and consultants to get to know each other and to work together on extended projects.
  • One-Time Appointments: Writers may use WCOnline to set up a one-time appointment. We strongly encourage all writers to schedule an appointment in advance.
  • Online Appointments: Writers may send papers for e-mail feedback. Writers may also converse with a consultant via instant-messenger/webcam.
  • Walk-In Appointments: Writers may stop by to see if a consultant is available to work with them on the spot for either 30- or 50-minute meetings.

Cancellation Policy

We ask writers to cancel online or call if they will be late or must miss their appointment. If any writer misses two meetings without cancelling ahead of time, we will no longer allow that writer to make an appointment for the duration of the quarter. They are, however, allowed to walk-in.
