National Day on Writing Events

Hosted by the DePaul University Center for Writing-based Learning and the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse

Lincoln Park Campus

What: Corpse Poem
When: Oct. 20, 2009, 10:00 am-3:00 pm
Where: McGaw Hall Atrium
How: Students, faculty, staff, and passersby are invited to contribute a line or stanza to a collaborative poem. Participants will first type their text into a laptop. Then, the text will be projected onto a wall in the atrium for passersby to see.

What: Graffiti Wall
When: Oct. 20, 2009, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm
Where: Outside McGaw Hall
How: Students, faculty, staff, and passersby are invited to paint graffiti on a makeshift wall. There also will be graffiti writers on site doing demonstrations.

What: Open Mic Night
When: Oct. 20, 2009, 7:00 pm-10:00 pm
Where: The Pit at SAC
How: Artists, writers, singers, storytellers, actors, etc. are invited to perform or present their original work. There will be a sign-up sheet at the event.

What: Writing Stories Podcast
When: Oct. 20, 2009, 7:00 pm-10:00 pm
Where: At DePaul's National Day on Writing events at the Loop and LPC campuses
How: Students are invited to tell stories about their experiences with writing. Stories will be edited into a collage and published in the UCWbL podcast.

Loop Campus

National Gallery of Writing

What: The National Gallery of Writing
When: Your can submit texts to the Gallery as soon as possible. The Gallery will be unveiled on the National Day on Writing, October 20, 2009.
Where: You can view our DePaul galleries here (for the First-Year Writing Program) and here (for DePaul at large). Click here to visit the host site.
How: The National Council of Teachers of English is putting together a virtual gallery of writing, inviting people from all walks of life to contribute their texts. Contributions are submitted online by visiting the gallery's website.

Lesson Plan Writing Workshop

Are you an education student? Need help writing lesson plans for class projects, student teaching applications, or teaching portfolios? Then come to the lesson plan workshop, sponsored by the School of Education and the Writing Center. The workshop will take place on Thursday, May 14, 4:30 pm-5:30 pm, in SAC 254.

Learn more about lesson plans, including how to:

  • Format them according to different templates
  • Include higher-order thinking skills
  • Engage students with a variety of learning styles
  • Assess students based on goals and objectives

Important Announcement Regarding WCOnline

We have finished upgrading WCOnline to better serve the student body. As a result, all users will need to create a new account when they visit the site. Even if you created an account for the previous version of WCOnline you will have to reregister. If you created an appointment in the old schedule, your appointment space has been reserved in the new WCOnline (even if you haven't registered in it yet).

Elizabeth Coughlin to Receive 2008-2009 McHugh Quality Staff Service Award

Congratulations to Elizabeth Coughlin, Assistant Director for Student Services, for being named a recipient of the 2008-2009 Kenneth A. McHugh Quality Staff Service Award. As is stated on the website of the Office of Mission & Values, this award is "presented to those individuals who have enhanced university initiatives by promoting collaboration and teamwork to support the institution's mission." This is a terrific accomplishment, and we are grateful to Liz for all of the tireless and altruistic work that has resulted in her receiving this award.

New Director of the Center for Writing-based Learning

We are proud to welcome Dr. Lauri Dietz as the new Director of the University Center for Writing-based Learning. Dr. Dietz took over the position on July 1st, 2008. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in English Renaissance Literature, and she began her work with writing centers as a peer tutor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before arriving at DePaul, Dr. Dietz directed the writing center at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.

After your appointment, you can fill out your survey and put it into the box marked "Surveys." Each quarter there will be a random drawing and three prizes will be awarded: one $200 gift card to the DePaul Bookstore and two $50 gift cards to the DePaul Bookstore.

First Year Writing Showcase

On May 22, the 3rd annual Writing Showcase will honor the work of students and faculty in First Year Programs courses. Join the featured student writers as they share their work, ranging from essays to multimedia projects, with their families and professors from 5-7 pm in the Cortelyou Commons. LPC Library Outpost Returns

We are glad to announce that during Spring Quarter 2008 the Center for Writing will continue to have a Library Outpost available to those students who wish to work in the convenient setting of DePaul's Richardson Library. The Outpost will begin operating during the second week of the quarter and continue until the tenth week. It will be open from 12 pm-5 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

We are glad to announce that beginning Tuesday, January 29th, the Center for Writing will have a Library Outpost available to those students who wish to work in the convenient setting of DePaul's Richardson Library. New Issue of First Draft

The UCWbL's fall issue of its quarterly faculty newsletter is now available. In this issue, learn about the new home of the First-Year Writing Program, how writing can be used in a Liberal Studies performance workshop, and student engagement in service learning. Excel Visits DePaul

Students from Excel Academy will have their second annual visit to DePaul University on November 10. As part of the high school's Heroic Journey Project, the day includes the final writing session with students from ENG 482: Writing Center Theory and Pedagogy, a tour of the DePaul campus, and a college information session with members of the Black Student Union.
