A major, minor or graduate concentration in Women’s and Gender Studies provides students with a strong educational foundation for life long learning through both traditional and nontraditional means; it informs students about historical and contemporary social justice issues and concerns; and it provides individuals with the critical thinking skills needed to examine cultural circumstances that generally remain unquestioned.

The Major The major consists of six required common core courses.
Three of the courses provide students with the basic skills
needed for an education in Women’s and Gender Studies.
By analyzing the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality,
age, national identity and dis/ablity students are afforded
a “gendered lens” through which to see social,
cultural and political issues. The three upper level required
courses offer a more in depth examination of feminist theories
and research. All program majors also choose four courses
within a specialized area of study and three complementary
electives.

The Minor
Similar to the major, the Women’s and Gender Studies
minor includes with three basic social analysis courses
aimed at providing students with a “gendered lens”
through which to see social, cultural and political issues.
Students are encouraged to expand their view of their personal
lives to include a framework that promotes resilient responses
to all forms of oppression. To complete the minor, program
participants take three additional courses to be chosen
from the approved course list from the Women’s and
Gender Studies major.
