Lesson Topic: Basic geography
Grade Level: First grade (can be adapted for other primary grades)
Time Frame: 3 days
Subject Matter: Geography, geology
Curriculum Standards:
1. To reinforce the basic geography concept of states and their relation to
the United States of America.
2. To teach students different types of land formations and types of bodies
of water.
Description:
Students are introduced to basic land and water formations through discussion,
looking at pictures from the LOC website in a power point presentation, and
drawing.
Technology Used:
Library of Congress website, power point, word document.
Detailed Activities:
Day one: Teacher introduces basic land formations through discussion. Together,
the class completes a chart brainstorming all the types of land and water they
can think of (lakes, rivers, mountains, etc.). Students are given squares of
paper to draw the various formations they know.
Day two: Teacher shows the Land Formation power
point to students, discussing forests, lakes, deserts, grasslands, and rocks
as the slides are shown. If a map of the United States is available, teacher
points out states as they arise.
Day three: Students are given Land and Water Formation worksheet to complete.
