Assessing Learning in the Classroom

Classroom assessment aims to determine how and what students are learning and/or to explore the effectiveness of various teaching methods.

DePaul's Teaching Commons website offers resources and strategies for the formal assessment of student learning including information about constructing tests, quizzes and essay exams that can enhance learning and designing rubrics for efficient and equitable grading.

For an excellent introduction and examples of informal Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATS) see Classroom Assessment Techniques, A Handbook for College Teachers, 2nd Ed. by Thomas A. Angelo and K. Patricia Cross (copies are available in the TLA office). The Teaching Commons also offers strategies and resources for using informal assignments called Classroom Assessment Techniques as quick ways of obtaining information about the extent to which students are learning or that they are prepared to learn class material.
