I am an associate professor in the English Department specializing in literary nonfiction. I write and teach courses in magazine writing and literary journalism, focusing on science, investigative reporting, urban issues, and the history of ideas. I also teach American literature and creative writing, as well as occasional courses in special topics like science literature and underground publishing. I also direct the internship program for English and Master of Arts in Writing students.
My books and magazine articles cover topics like murder, science and the investigation of truth. My most recent book, Bold Science: Seven Scientists Who Are Changing Our World (W.H. Freeman and Company, 2000, 2001) tells the stories of seven creative researchers in astronomy, genetics, neuroscience and ecology, and other fields fundamentally changing the next millennium. It focuses on the action of how ideas evolve--the rancorous, contentious and loopy process of thought transforming our lives. This collection investigates the nature of creativity in a time of unparalleled intensity and financial reward.
Currently I am working on a project writing about research into longevity genes.
My previous book, Eros, Magic and the Murder of Professor Culianu (Northwestern University Press, 1996), won the Carl Sandburg Award in Nonfiction from the Friends of the Chicago Library, and was nominated for a National Book Award from Investigative Reporters and Editors. It is the true story of the campus murder of a charismatic young specialist in Renaissance magic on May 21, 1991 at the University of Chicago. Ioan Culianu was a scholar engaged to a former student who was fascinated by the thin line between fiction and fact. An opponent of the post-communist regime in his native Romania, he wrote short stories that seemed eerily prescient both about politics in his home country and his own, unsolved murder. My magazine work on the story for Lingua Franca: A Review of Academic Life was nominated for a National Magazine Award in Reporting in 1993.
I have written for The Sciences, Chicago, Chicago Tribune, Publishers Weekly, Learning, Teaching, and other publications. My awards include a Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship in Romania, an Excellence in Teaching Award nomination at DePaul, and Illinois and New Jersey Arts Council Grants.
