Tutoring
The
SSS program provides individual tutoring and group study opportunities
in mathematics, writing and a variety of other subject areas for
active SSS participants.
We
encourage you to take advantage of the many tutoring opportunities
provided by the program regardless of how well you may be doing
in class.
If
you think you may benefit from tutoring in a course
or courses, please make an appointment early
in the quarter in order to review the course syllabus,
identify areas for assistance and set up a schedule
for future meetings.
What
to expect from a tutoring session
It
is important to understand that what you will get
out of a tutoring session depends very much on what
you put into it. SSS tutoring is designed not just
to help you achieve in your classes, but also to support
your continued development as an active learner. Please
bear the following points in mind when preparing for
tutoring in the SSS program:
- Don’t
leave it until you are over your head in a class
before making a tutoring appointment. Tutoring
works best over time, so make your first appointment
during the first week or two of classes and be
prepared to schedule sessions throughout the quarter.
- Come
to tutoring sessions prepared. Bring a course
syllabus, books and class notes with you to the
first session and think about what kinds of questions
you have about the material or assignments. Make
sure you have read class materials or worked through
problems and assignments before coming to your
appointment.
- Don’t
expect the tutor to do the learning for you. It
is not the tutor’s responsibility to review all
aspects of course material, conduct a mini-lecture
or do class problems for you. The tutor will provide
insights and support, will work through problems
with you and provide a sounding board for papers
and assignments. But ultimately, the work has
to be yours.
- Always
ask questions. Questions help identify and clarify
problems and engage you with the learning task
at hand.
- Attend
class and do the readings. Tutoring cannot substitute
for classes not attended or readings not done.
- Allow
time for tutoring and any additional work that
may be required. Learning often requires time
and discipline. Don’t expect instant success!
- Keep
your appointments and be prompt for your tutoring
session. Be courteous to your tutor at all times
and expect the same in return.
