"The scientist, by the very nature of his commitment, creates more and more questions, never fewer. Indeed the measure of our intellectual maturity, one philosopher suggests, is our capacity to feel less and less satisfied with our answers to better problems."

~ G.W. Allport

 NIH Application Forms are Changing

Effective Jan. 25, 2010, applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health will require new grant application forms and will include some shorter page limits. Those submitted on incorrect application forms will be delayed and run the risk of not being reviewed. Applicants should review the new instructions and begin preparing for a shorter research plan. You must return to the FOA (or new Parent Announcement) in December to download the new forms.

For more information, consult the Enhancing Peer Review website at http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/restructured_applications.html.

 In the Spotlight

SSRC Director and DePaul Sociology Professor Greg Scott received the 2008 Lisagor Award for Best Investigative/Public Service Reporting for his Chicago Public Radio series “The Brickyard: Life on the Streets of Chicago.”
The Brickyard is an ethnographic documentary film chronicling the lives of nearly 100 injection drug users and crack smokers who inhabit a semi-concealed public space in Chicago.

The Making of SSRC...

The Social Science Research Center was established within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LA&S) to centralize support for faculty and students engaged in behavioral and social science research (BSSR) at DePaul University. The Center resulted from nearly 18 months’ worth of discussion, planning, and strategizing among members of the Social Science Research Center Task Force, a diverse group of BSSR faculty within the College. Task Force members envisioned the Center as a communications hub, a resource and data repository, and a technical assistance provider that would help put socially relevant research at DePaul into the service of “the public.” The Center’s promotion of cross-disciplinary, multi-methodology research and its intention to serve as a university-wide meeting ground and intellectual-technical focal point embody and advance the spirit of VISION twenty12, a strategic plan designed to make DePaul one of the country’s premier urban Catholic universities.
