Biography

Born in Borsaglepsk/Voronesh, Russia, Chuck is a U.S. Citizen, married to Edith K. Suchar and the father of two sons, David and Adam [both DePaul graduates].

Chuck Suchar is Professor and Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the former Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.   He has been a member of the full-time faculty since 1971. Chuck received his B.A. degree from DePaul in 1967, his M.A. from Northwestern University in 1968 and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Sociology in 1972. He was awarded a NATO/National Science Foundation Post-Doctorate Fellowship and was at The Sociological Institute of The University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 1975-76.  

Chuck's published works and interest range from the study of deviant behavior and the sociology of mental illness to his interests in visual sociology and the study of changing urban communities.   He was the President of The International Visual Sociology Association for four years from 1990-94, has been an Executive Board member of that organization 1989-present and is an Associate Editor of the journal Visual Studies - Routledge- Francis and Taylor, U.K.

Earlier publications included such works as Social Deviance: Perspectives and Prospects (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1978) and "The Institutional Reaction to Child Mental Illness: Co-Deviant Labeling", Journal of Social Issues (Vol. 34, No. 4, 1978). His latest publications include a book chapter [2004] "Amsterdam and Chicago: Seeing the Macro-characteristics of Gentrification" in Knowles and Sweetman's Picturing the Social Landscape  Routledge, Great Britain;   a Feature Photo Essay: "A Tale of Two Cities"" in Contexts, Vol.3 #3   [Aug. 2004 The American Sociological Association]; a book co-edited with J. Rury: DePaul : Centennial Essays and Images [Kendall-Hunt, 1998] [official institutional history of DePaul University]; "Grounding Visual Sociology Research in Shooting Scripts", Qualitative Sociology, 1997; "Judging the Adequacy of Shelter: A Case from Lincoln Park" with R. Rotenberg, Journal of Architectural and Planning Research, 1994; "The Jordaan: Community Change and Gentrification in Amsterdam", Visual Sociology, 1993; and "Icons and Images of Gentrification: The Changed Material Culture Of An Urban Community" in R. Hutchinson's Gentrification and Urban Change: Research in Urban Sociology, Vol. 2 pp. 165-192 JAI Press Inc. (1992).

Chuck has been actively engaged in teaching and academic administration and has taken a special interest in academic program development at the undergraduate and graduate levels.   He is the creator/founding director of DePaul's Discover Chicago Program , a First Year experiential learning program that has received national and international attention. Chuck also chaired the committee that created the Focal Point Seminar Program, required of all DePaul Freshman and helped create the Explore Chicago Program.   More recently he has co-chaired or chaired committees to create new graduate programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

In addition to teaching a wide range of sociology and interdisciplinary courses, Chuck has also taught workshops in documentary photography and visual sociology for the University of Bologna, Italy at its summer institute (three years), the University of Antwerp, Panteion University, Athens, Greece 2002, and University of Southampton, England.

Chuck was the recipient of the inaugural St. Vincent DePaul Professorship in 2004, the 1999-2000 Spirit of DePaul Award, the 1997 Public Service Award of the University, received the 1996 College of Liberal Arts and SciencesExcellence in Teaching Award and the 1991 Sears-Roebuck Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award. He served as Chairman of the University Task Force on Teaching Evaluation, the Co-chair (with Laurie Worral) of the University Task Force on Service-Learning, and was the Director of the DePaul/Lilly Faculty Development Project in the area of the urban mission of the university.  

Chuck has been elected to and has served on the Faculty Council (and before that the University Senate] at DePaul U. for a total of 21 years. Chuck co-chaired the University Task Force on Service Learning [1997-98].   In addition, Chuck has served as Chairperson of United Way of Chicago's Community Development Priority Grants Committee and also has served on United Way's Community Development Needs Assessment Committee.   He has also served as Division Head of the Behavioral and Social Sciences and was Director of DePaul's Honors Studies Program for five years.
