Rising Rings was commissioned by Dr. Swraj Paul to honor his dughter Ambika Paul. A native of India, Dr. Paul traveled to England to seek medical aid when his daughter contracted leukemia at the age of two. While in England Dr. Paul began to acquire and revive defunct steel mills and in the process he revived the communities where they were located. His steel empire expanded to continental Europe and finally the U.S. His last project was to re-open the long dormant facilities of Sharon Steel, once the fifth larges steel mill in America.
Ambika died in 1968 at age four. This monument honors the inspiration her joy of life instilled in her father. On two dates, Ambika's birthday and the anniversary of the mill's re-opening the noon sunlight passes through the circular opening in the larger ring and strikes markers on the inner ring. Miklos Simon created the portrait of Ambika mounted on the smaller ring.
