Announcements

• If you submit your Project 4a or 4b on Friday, 7/20 or later, you will have to look under Course History to submit your project on the dlweb site. No Project 4a or 4b zip files will be accepted after noon on Monday, 7/23.

  If you have trouble submitting your project on the dlweb over the weekend, send your zip file as an attachment to me at sjost@cti.depaul.edu. Be sure you name your zip file according to the naming convention.

• Reminder: for Project 4a, create your StringTokenizer objects like this:
  StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(",\n");
  You want commas to be considered as delimiters but not spaces because the course title field has embedded spaces.

• The Sun web site http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/index.html has an exhaustive guide to the Java Class Library.

• I made some additions to the Final Review Guide (the DecimalFormat and Graphics classes were the major additions). There may be some deletions on Monday, depending on how our review session in class goes.

• The solution including recursion tree for the Recursion Example of Day8 is shown in the Lecture Summary for Day8.

• In the sample main method for the Dealer project I accidently left out the command line argument parameter array. The header for this method should look like public static void main(String[] args) If you leave String[ ] args out, the program will compile, but give strange results.

• I will put the answers to the review questions in the Day8 summary on Thursday, 7/12.

• See the description of the Dealer Project some code to implement randomly shuffling the leftstack and rightstack together. There was one case that I left out when I wrote the code on the board.

• The Review Guide for the Final Exam is ready.

• The Final Exam will be held on July 18 at the normal class time 6:00pm.

• I made some changes to the Dealer Project Description. There are some addition hints and some typos have been corrected. If something has been confusing you, reread that section.

• Distance Learning Students: Contact me as soon as possible if you need to make special arrangements for the final exam. Send me email even if you have already spoken to me about this on the telephone. If I don't hear from you, I will assume that you will take the final with the regular section of the class on Wednesday, June 18 at 6:00pm in Room 1009 of the Lewis Center at the Loop Campus.

• The grades for the Midterm Exam are posted. They are out of 100. See the syllabus for the mapping of your score to a letter grade. I will hand back the test bluebooks to the regular section on Monday, 7/9. Distance learning students, let me know how you want me to return exam. If you wish, I will give your midterm back to you when you take the final exam.

• Try to get the Card and Stack classes ready for Monday, 6/9. We will talk about the Dealer project more in class on Monday. For those of you ready to start writing the Dealer class, I have added an additional hint in the Project 3 description for the Dealer class.

• The Answers to the Practice Midterm Questions are ready. Note that a question 7 has been added under Problems. Note that the Short Answer questions can involve writing code, but that code will only be a few lines. The code for the Problems will tend to be longer.

• The midterm exam is on July 2 at 6:00pm. Both the midterm and final exams are open book and open notes.

• The method for determining whether a Swing radio button is isSelected, not getState. See the Controls Example from Day1.

• When running the Keyboard example from Day2, compile, right click on the class Average icon, and selecting void main(args). If you don't see the Terminal Window, bring it up by selecting View on the main BlueJ window and Show Terminal. There may be other projects where you must explicitly bring up the terminal window like this.

• As you know, there is no class on Wednesday, July 4. To make up for this I will be holding office hours on Thursday, July 5, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm in my office on the fourth floor of the CTI building in the loop (243 S. Wabash). This is for questions on the projects. You can contact me in three ways:
  1. In person. Come to the fourth floor. The front desk will be locked, but call me at x6101 on the campus phone by the elevators and I will let you in.
     
  2. By phone. Call me at 312/362-6101. If I am talking to someone else on the phone, leave a message and I will try to call you back.
     
  3. By email. Send me a message at sjost@cti.depaul.edu.

• Distance Learning students. Let me know by Wednesday, 6/27 if you need to make special arrangements for the midterm exam on July 2, 2000. If I don't hear from you, I will assume that you are taking the midterm with the regular section of the class at the Loop Campus in Lewis 1009.

• The Project 3 Description is ready.

• The directions for installing the Keyboard class are given in the Class Descriptions for Day1 and Day2. Make sure that you do not have BlueJ open when you do this. I think that is why I had trouble when I installed the Keyboard class during class. It worked fine after class after I had closed and reopened BlueJ.

• Some of you are complaining that the JOptionPane example doesn't work. The problem is that the input box is hidden behind the other BlueJ windows. Just move or minimize them to find the input box. Normally one creates input boxes or message boxes from a user interface where things work better.

• Unfortunately, a software glich on Monday prevented the mimeoboard from feeding into the COL website. I will let you know tonight (6/20) if this will still be a problem.

• The description for Project 2 is ready to view.

• Here is the bluej-114.jar file in case you cannot download it. If your modem is too slow to download it from here, download it in the computer lab, copy it to a disk, and take it home to your computer.

• The new version of BlueJ, version 1.1.4, is available on the BlueJ website www.bluej.org. The installation directions remain the same with the file bluej-113.jar replaced by bluej-114.jar.

• This class is scheduled to meet at the Loop Campus in Lewis, Room 1009. The first meeting is on June 18 at 6:00pm.
