TAK Religious Studies Honor Society

Theta Alpha Kappa was founded in 1976 to honor outstanding undergraduate students in the fields of religious studies and/or theology. The Society, which has over 120 active chapters, sponsors the scholarly Journal of Theta Alpha Kappa. This journal is published regularly and is disseminated to active members. It features work of qualified students as well as professional academics.

In order to be eligible for membership in Theta Alpha Kappa, religious studies majors must meet three academic criteria: (1) be at least a Junior; (2) completed at least seven courses in the major with a departmental GPA of at least 3.5; and (3) achieved an overall GPA of at least 3.3 (as of the Spring Quarter). The department notifies eligible students in April of each year.

Why Study Religion?

The world's religions provide order and meaning as well as the capacity to challenge and transform individuals and societies.

Religious Studies majors explore the religious dimensions of life and culture through the study of myth, symbol, ritual and doctrine.

An exploration of the distribution of justice and fairness is also emphasized through community-based service learning and the study of ethical issues in the medical and professional world.

Religious Studies teaches the skills of analytical and critical reasoning, creative problem solving, and effective communication with significant applications in journalism, social work, law, theology, ministry and professional religious orders, anthropology, and comparative religion.
