Pilates Training

What is Pilates? The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises.  These classes are designed to tone muscles, improve posture and balance, and increase flexibility, body control and mental focus.  Pilates training is progressive in nature and some participants may benefit from repeating a class before moving on to the next level.  New participants must take Pilates Fundamentals and should register for a beginning-level class.

Beginning classes are for new participants to learn the basic concepts, techniques and movements used in Pilates training.   Participation in a beginning class is a prerequisite to taking an intermediate level class in that same format.

Beginning/Intermediate classes are open to students who have completed at least 8 hours of instruction in that discipline (mat or reformer) with a certified instructor.

Intermediate classes are for participants who have completed at least 16 hours of instruction in that discipline (mat or reformer) or have an instructor’s recommendation to work at the intermediate level.

Intermediate/Advanced classes are for participants with previous intermediate-level Pilates training with a certified instructor.

Intensive classes are designed for participants who desire a more challenging workout in a semi-private class setting.  The small group atmosphere of 3-4 students allows for more individual attention from the instructor.

  Pilates Fundamentals

This class is required prior to all mat and reformer training for first-time participants.  This body-awareness educational session is the perfect primer to understanding the Pilates method.  Begin to learn proper breathing, spinal alignment, mental focus and body control to help you build a foundation for future Pilates training. Continuing students are encouraged to take this class periodically to brush up on the fundamentals, making their Pilates workouts even more effective.

Her infectious energy and passion for Pilates make her classes easy, enjoyable and full of results. An experienced dancer and Power Pilates® certified instructor, Martha is tough on technique and offers a unique workout that will challenge and inspire students at all levels.

Wendy's background as a dancer and an educator allows her to better intuit the needs of her students. In addition to her love of teaching and graceful, strong movement, Wendy has also successfully completed 14 triathlons. Wendy received her training through the PhysicalMind Institute®, where she also tests out new Pilates instructors for certification.

Cynthia Frelund

Cynthia's teaching style is very energetic and she challenges her students to work harder every week. She uses her dance background and Stott training for her "game plan" and fine tunes the workout using her Power Pilates® and Feldenkrais® training. Cynthia is pursuing a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. She is also a runner and plans on running five half-marathons in 2008.

Vanessa Greenway

Vanessa is certified in Mat and Standing Pilates and is completing her equipment training through the PhysicalMind Institute®. She integrates the standing Pilates repertoire and advanced breath and balance work into her classes, helping students create efficient and agile movement and increased body awareness. Vanessa received her BFA from the Theatre School at DePaul, where her studies included yoga, Tai Chi, Feldenkrais®, Laban movement analysis, stage combat and dance. She performs regularly in Chicago and is an Artist in Residence with the Griffin Theatre Company.

Alison Powell

Alison is the new Assistant Director of Fitness/Wellness at DePaul Campus Recreation. She holds a master’s degree in Kinesiology from Indiana University. She completed her Pilates certification through IU’s professional intensive course in matwork, and is a certified group fitness instructor through the American Council on Exercise. Alison enjoys the unique balance that Pilates brings to help participants reach their fitness and lifestyle goals.

Juliette Wheaton

When looking of a new addition to her workout routine, Juliette considered Pilates. She was intimidated because she was not a dancer or famous actress, but after taking one class, she was hooked for life. Juliette is certified to teach on both the mat and equipment through the PhysicalMind Institute®. Pilates changed her body and more importantly, her mind. She is grateful for the chance to do that for others.
