Basic Information:
• To enroll in the DePaul/IIT Joint program, students must
first be admitted to DePaul University. The joint program
for students interested in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering
is administered by the Department of Physics, while the program
for students interested in Chemical Engineering is administered
by the Department of Chemistry. High school students interested
in the joint program should apply for admission to DePaul
University and indicate that their intended major is either
Physics or Chemistry, depending on their interests. Students
enrolled in the joint programs administered by the Department
of Physics will complete the requirements for the concentration
in Engineering Physics, which can be
found in the DePaul University Catalog.
• Once admitted to DePaul, students must officially apply
to IIT to be admitted to the joint program. There is no fee
for this application, which is available online at: http://edserve.iit.edu/.
From this page, students should select the “Part-Time Admission
Application” link. As they fill out the form, students should
be sure to select the Joint Program, and identify themselves
as DePaul students. Students will also need to request that
an offical transcript be sent to IIT. To do this, they should
log on to campus connect at DePaul and request that a transcript
be mailed to: Carole Orze, Director; Office of Educational
Services; 101 Main Buidling; 3300 S. Federal St.; Chicago,
IL 60616. There is no fee for this service if regular mail
delivery is requested. IIT prefers that
students
apply
for
the joint
program
after
completing
at least one year at DePaul, so students should apply at
the end of their first year, or during their second year,
depending on when they wish to begin taking courses at
IIT.
• Students will typically take only DePaul classes in their
first year; those enrolled in Engineering Physics take
the same set of first-year courses as regular physics majors.
Students will usually begin taking IIT classes during their
second or third year at DePaul.
• The academic calendars for DePaul and IIT are quite different.
DePaul is on a quarter system, and IIT is on a semester
system. For example, for the 2001–2002 academic year, DePaul’s
Autumn
Quarter ran from September 5 through November 21, Winter
Quarter ran from January 7 through March 22, and Spring
Quarter ran from April 1 through June 14. On the other
hand, IIT’s
Fall Semester ran from August 27 through December 15, and
its Spring Semester ran from January 22 through May 18.
Because of this, IIT Spring Semester courses overlap both
Winter
and Spring Quarters at DePaul.
• Tuition for courses taken at IIT will be billed through
DePaul, so students will receive only a single bill for
tuition. Students in the joint program pay a discounted
tuition for
IIT courses.
• If students are taking classes at IIT, they must register
for classes at both schools. They must register for IIT
classes at IIT, and they must register for both IIT classes
and DePaul
classes at DePaul.
• Students in the joint program will have academic advisors
at both DePaul and IIT. It is extremely important that
students meet with their DePaul advisor during their first
quarter
at DePaul to discuss their schedules. Once admitted to
the joint program, students must meet with an IIT advisor
before
registering for courses at IIT. IIT blocks registration;
this block is only lifted when students meet with an advisor
at IIT.
• Currently, only the programs in Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering have been formalized. Work is proceeding on
the programs in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.
These programs should be in place soon enough so that current
students can participate in them if they so desire.
• A sample program shows a possible sequence
of courses for a student who will obtain degrees from both
IIT
and DePaul. It best fits students who begin in Physics
170 and Math 160 (or 147 or 170) in their first quarter
at DePaul.
The scheduling of courses can be adjusted for students
that do not fit this pattern. Additionally, students can
receive
a minor from IIT (instead of a full degree) and a B.S.
in Physics from DePaul and complete the program in four
years.
• Course descriptions for IIT courses in Mechanical and
Aerospace Engineering are available on the web at http://mmae.iit.edu/downloads/ugcourses.pdf.
Course descriptions for the classes listed in the sample
program are also available.
• Good IIT courses for students to start with are EG 105,
MS 201, and MMAE 201.
• Students can get more information about the joint program
from Dr. Fischer at 773/325-1379, Dr. Goedde at 773/325-137
or Dr. Behof at 773/325-7332.
