Possible Areas of Focus for Independent Learning Projects by Domain
Note: The following are merely suggestions; the student's particular
interests should drive the choice of topic, in conference with her/his
committee and the course instructor. The focus of the competences can be
on Poland or Romania, or on a cross-cultural understanding which compares
both societies.
Physical World
- Environmental issues
- The development of technology
- Medical issues (abortion, AIDS, etc.)
- Alternative medicine (herbal; spas; homeopathy; etc)
- Geography and quality of life
Arts of Living
- Revolutionary literature
- Transition from censorship to a free press
- Theological and spiritual transformations and issues
- Changing lifestyles
- Popular or folk art
Human Community
- Ethnic relations and conflict (e.g., Romani (gypsies), Hungarians,
Germans, Ukrainians, Jews)
- Women's roles in societal transformations
- Psychological implications of societal changes
- Oral histories
- Activism in the newly forming societies
- Political or economic analysis of the societies
World of Work
These will obviously depend on the student's defined area of concentration
for the World of Work; a few possibilities include:
- Free enterprise in the societies
- Women and work
- International business
