The Career Center is here to help you! Finding an internship or job is not an easy task. Most likely, a job is NOT going to fall into your lap. The Career Center is here to provide you with quality services, but securing a job will take some initiative on your part as well. The Career Center offers a variety of services for everyone, no matter where you are at in your college career. This article will highlight the Job/Internship searching process. In order to take advantage of the Career Center services here are some simple steps to get you started: Register with the Career Center The benefits of registering with the Career Center are numerous. You will be able to participate in On-Campus Recruiting (OCR), view all job listings, sign-up for workshops and events, be notified of events that are of particular interest to your major, and more. The registration process, including creating an on-line resume or uploading your resume, takes approximately 30 minutes. Once this is completed, please allow 2 business days for your information to be migrated into our system. Then you can easily view and refer your resume to jobs, internships, and other opportunities. The registration system is called 1stPlace!, and is accessible from the website at http://careercenter.depaul.edu Once you are registered, it is important to check 1stPlace! frequently. This is how employers will communicate with you regarding interviews. Many companies/organizations have already started recruiting for June grads, so don't wait until the spring to start your job search! This past quarter, companies like The Hull Group, Trustmark, and Household International were on campus conducting company presentations and interviewing math students to fill positions like Actuarial Assistant and Credit Risk Analyst. Take advantage of advising services and workshops Before you send your resume to an employer, before you send in those graduate school applications, or before you go on any interviews - remember to use our advising and workshop services! Make sure that your resume is in tip-top shape by stopping by to see a Peer Career Advisor. Make sure that you are connecting with your Career Advisor (that would be me) to make sure you are aware of all of your opportunities. Signup for a workshop such as Interviewing skills, or Self-Effective Marketing so you feel confident when you speak with employers. All of our workshops are listed on our website and published in our quarterly newsletter called Connections which is available in the Career Center. Network, network, network! The more contacts you make, then better chance you will have of landing a job. You will be surprised as to what can come of a brief encounter. So how do you make these contacts? Networking events and programs! The Career Center offers the Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) program that allows you to get in touch with alumni who were math majors and are now working in various industries. You have the opportunity to talk with them about his/her line of work and get an insider’s perspective on job searching tips. Another networking event specifically for Math majors is scheduled for this spring. At this event you will have the chance to listen and meet a panel of speakers in the field of mathematics. And don’t forget those knowledgeable professors! They may have contacts that can help you out. It doesn’t hurt to ask! As your career advisor, I am here to help you. Even if you are not sure what to do or where you are headed, come and see me. I will try my best to help you make sense of things. You can contact me by phone, email, or stop into the Career Center and make an appointment with me. Please note that I will be on maternity leave for most of winter quarter, but another advisor will be taking over for me while I’m gone. You can contact me at abannon@depaul.edu or 773-325-7395. Take advantage of what the Career Center has to offer you! |
