Teacher of Mathematics: Secondary Level
Program of Study

The sample program shown below is provided as a guide in course selection; however, students are strongly encouraged to consult with faculty advisors in both the mathematical sciences department and the school of education to plan their programs.

Mathematics:

One of the first-year calculus sequences:
MAT 150-1-2 Calculus I, II, III;
or
MAT 160-1-2 Calculus for Mathematics and Science Majors I, II, III;
or MAT 170-1-2 ProMath Calculus for Mathematics and Science Majors I, II, III
(prerequisite or corequisite: MAT 131 or placement by the Mathematics Diagnostic Test)

Note: The 160-1-2 and 170-1-2 sequences are only offered beginning in the autumn quarter of each year. Both sequences are highly recommended for students concentrating in the teaching of mathematics.

  Either MAT 215 Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning (prerequisite: MAT 151 or 161 or 171)

or the combination of MAT 140 and 141 Discrete Mathematics I and II (prerequisite: MAT 130 or placement by the Mathematics Diagnostic Test)

  MAT 260 and 261 Multivariable Calculus I and II (prerequisite: MAT 152 or 162 or 172 or consent of the department chairperson)

Note: MAT 260-261 is only offered in the autumn and winter quarters.

  MAT 262 Linear Algebra (prerequisite: MAT 260)

Note: MAT 262 is only offered in the spring quarter.

  Either MAT 230 Number Theory and MAT 310 Abstract Algebra I
or MAT 310 and 311 Abstract Algebra I and II (prerequisite for MAT 230: MAT 141 or 215 or consent of the department chairperson; prerequisite for MAT 310: either MAT 141 or 215 and either MAT 262 or 220 or 230)
  Either MAT 320 and 321 Geometry I and II
or MAT 320 Geometry I and MAT 335 Real Analysis I (prerequisite for MAT 320: MAT 152 or 162 or 172 or consent of the department chairperson; prerequisite for MAT 335: either MAT 152 or 162 or 172 and either MAT 141 or 215)

Note: MAT 335 will be offered in 1999-2000 and in alternate years thereafter. MAT 320-321 will be offered in 2000-2001 and in alternate years thereafter.

  MAT 301 History of Mathematics (prerequisite: MAT 151 or 161 or 171)

Note: MAT 301 will be offered in 1999-2000 and in alternate years thereafter.

  Either MAT 351 Probability and Statistics I or MAT 348 Applied Statistical Methods (prerequisite for MAT 351: MAT 261; prerequisite for MAT 348: MAT 151 or 161 or 171)

SE 363 Orientation to Secondary Teaching as a Profession
  SE 325 Literacy in the Content Areas
  SE 364 Methods: Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary Schools (prerequisite: SE 363 or permission)
  SE 309 Teaching and Learning Secondary School Mathematics (prerequisite: SE 364 or equivalent)
  LSE 380 Philosophical Issues in Education and Cultural Studies
  LSI 346 Strategies for Mainstreaming and Inclusion (prerequisite: junior standing)
  Either SCU 338 The Process and Evaluation of Learning or 339 Philosophy and Psychology of Middle Level Education
  One of the following four courses: SCU 207 Social and Historical Issues in Education, SCU 336 Adolescent and Adult Growth and Development, SCU 337 Human Growth and Development, PSY 303 Human Development
  SE 390 Secondary Student Teaching and Seminar (prerequisite: Open only to students who have applied and been accepted into student teaching. See program advisor.)
