Welcome to the Loop Service Corps Homepage

Important Update!!!
We have just been informed that, unfortunately, Loop Service Corps will no longer be a DCSA organization next year. This was the message we received from our advisor, "As of right now Loop Service Corp as a DCSA org will fold. The service sites however will be retained. Off the Streets will take St. James on and Rest will be taken on by SAHH (Students Against Hunger and Homelessness). Siobhan and I felt the philosophy of Loop Service Corp did not work. All the groups will need to recruit from downtown campus. We are looking into a possible intern downtown to work on linking DCSA to the loop campus. This will greatly help our recruiting from the loop as well." This was very disappointing news to us, but at least the sites will still have volunteers visiting them.
Mission Statement
Loop Service Corps is a community service organization based at the Loop Campus. We promote community service opportunities to Loop students by finding sites that attempt to fit Loop students busy schedules.
Rest Sleepwalk
Each Spring, Residents for Effective Shelter Transitions (REST), holds a special walk-a-thon to benefit the homeless men and women of Chicago. This Sleepwalk is one of several special events held throughout the year to not only raise funds, but to also raise awareness.
On Saturday, April 29, 2000, REST will sponsor the Sleepwalk to raise money for its programs and to support their shelter system. Last year, nearly 250 participants joined REST staff and clients for the lake-side stroll. This year, REST hopes to have as many as 500 walkers, including student, church, and business groups.
DePaul is hoping to get at least 100 people out to support REST this year. We have Sleepwalk Participant forms and will soon be getting Pledge forms, so you can start raising money. If you are interested or need more information, feel free to contact us at the e-mail address or phone number at the bottom of this page. Thanks!
Vincentian Community Service Day 2000
Launched last year in conjunction with DePaul's centennial celebration, the annual university-wide service day will mark its second year May 6 by transporting volunteers to perform community service at approximately 15 sites around the city.
From community gardening and tree mulching in disadvantaged areas to painting at CHA senior citizen apartments and at grade schools in low-income areas, the kickoff event for St. Vincent's Week exemplifies DePaul's Catholic, Vincentian and urban mission and its commitment to community service.
All service day participants will gather at 9 a.m. at Alumni Hall, 1011 W. Belden Ave., in the final event to be held in the historic building before its June demolition. Following a ceremony, volunteers will be head out in buses and arrive at their service sites about 10:30 a.m. Box lunches will be provided for all participants, who will work until about 2:30 p.m.

St. James Elementary School
St. James Elementary School's after school program serves children between the ages of 5 and 11 in a predominantly African-American community located close to DePaul's Loop campus. Volunteers will work directly with children by helping them with their homework or playing educational games. The program focuses on instilling the fundamental academic skills in reading, writing, English, spelling, and mathematics. The program also coordinates holiday parities for the children and organizes and leads field trips to local museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions for the children.

We travel to St. James from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. Our dates for volunteering are April 15, May 6 (Guest Speaker) and May 20, and June 3 and June 17 (End of Year Party).
We will have a van reserved for all the days, so you can either meet David at 8:50 a.m. on the Lincoln Park campus at the Belden parking lot (next to Stuart Cafeteria) or meet Sharonda at 9:30 a.m. in front of the DePaul Center on Jackson Street.
In case we don't contact you in time to give you directions if you are transporting yourself there, the address for St. James is 2942 South Wabash. You can click this link to get directions - St. James Map
R.E.S.T Warming Shelter
Loop Service Corps has established a relationship with R.E.S.T (Residents for Effective Shelter Transitions). We now will be volunteering at their warming center on the North Side off the Berwyn stop on the CTA Red Line. We travel to REST on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 8:00 p.m. until 10:15 p.m. Volunteer responsibilities include: set-up for client arrival and dinner, check-in of clients, serving of the meal, and clean-up afterwards. This volunteer activity can be a lot of fun while getting to know fellow volunteers and listening to the stories of some of the shelter guests. For more information on R.E.S.T. visit their site at www.restweb.org.
