Theory Evaluation Assignment |
The purpose of this paper is to examine and critique a communication
theory covered in either text or lecture.
In essence, you will be evaluating a communication theory of your choice on the basis of the criteria of evaluation outlined in chapter 2 and discussed in class. The information contained in the 8 articles you abstracted for Paper 1, and the contents of the additional articles you were required to read and understand should serve as the foundation for this project.. |
Recommended format |
Introduction/Overview: Why should the reader be interested in what you have to write? What is the purpose of this paper? (5 points) |
Theory Description: Describe the theory you have selected (make sure you refer to the seminal work here). (10 points). |
* Theory Evaluation: Theoretical scope (review of the literature is pertinent here) (10 points); appropriateness (10 points); heuristic value (10 points); validity (10 points), parsimony (10 points). |
* Theoretical Development: In this section you are asked to "extend" (10 points) and "intensify" (10 points)(extension and intension) the theory you are evaluating based on your reading and personal experiences. |
Conclusion: Here, summary statements are required about what was accomplished/achieved in this assignment. (5 points). |

* Note: These are the key sections of your paper. The bulk of
your work should concentrate on addressing issues of
theory evaluation and development. Also note that 10 points will be allocated to spelling, grammar, following directions, etc.). |
Other Requirements: Papers for undergraduate students should be approximately 10 pages in length.. Graduate student papers must be at least 15 pages in length. Papers must be typed and follow one of the recommended style manuals (APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian). Please refer to Paper - Part 1 Instructions for general information on what constitutes "mechanics." The deadline for this assignment is indicated on the class schedule. Papers should be handed in during regular class period. Late papers will be lowered by a third of a letter grade for each day they are overdue. |

This assignment is worth 25% of your final grade. Any student found
