Cognitive Complexity and Compliance-Gaining Exercise
Interview a five-year old, a twelve-year-old and a
twenty-year-old about how they would persuade another person to give them
something they wanted. Write down their answers. Be specific with the respondent
about the items sought and make these appropriate to the age level. Analyze
these responses in terms of the apparent cognitive complexity with which
the persuasion strategies are devised. To what extent does age seem to
be related to the degree to which respondents take the perspective of the
other in their attempts to persuade.
