Ideology Illustration
"The ideology presented in the media is that women are these erotic and sexual beings here for the fulfillment of male pleasures. Intelligence and talent are not taken into account - only our bodies are. There are few alternate ideologies out there in the media concerning women."
Blanca Rabiela
"The ideology in this video consisted of a set of ideas concerning female sexuality and females' role in society. For example, the following ideas were presented: woman as passive and willing, in a constant state of arousal, as decorative, as objects, as needing a man for emotional fulfillment."

Hegemony Illustration
"The hegemony in this video (where one set of ideas overtook another) was apparent. These music videos were written and directed by 90% men. So, male views (specifically, male sexual fantasy worlds) were predominant in the portrayal of women. The subordinated group obviously consisted of women. They bought into this world of "fame" and by accepting it, contributed to their own subordination."
Annette Wilhoyt
" Many women allow themselves to be portrayed according to the male perspective; women participate in this fantasy world by being portrayed as sex objects (Madonna is a great example of this)."
Erica Polancic
"This ideology is hegemonic because the industry is dominated by males. Most of the artists are male and most of the video producers are also males. They present their fantasies in the video and therefore perpetuate the negative ideology that depicts women as totally sexual & submissive to men's desires. Even women buy into this stereotype. Women artists such as Janet Jackson & Salt 'n Pepper had a very normal image early in their careers....they both revamped their images to very sexy and revealing."

Social Effects
"This combo is not very productive to the women at all. The media produces an image of the woman that is completely false. These are images that are generated in the fantasy world of men. Upon viewing these videos, women see other women who are for the most part thin, beautiful and attract the gaze of men. This makes the average woman desire to be like the fictional characters of the videos. This is why Bulemia and Anorexia are so common among women. Also the media tends to depict these fictional women, not only as objects but as separate pieces. They, the media, portray a fragmented woman. These fictional characters have no identity, no sense of being. This can be very harmful to the woman viewer..."
Marisol Lopez
"All these images in the media have many detrimental effects on society. Women are surrounded by images of ultra-thin and impossibly beautiful women. This can cause eating disorders and low self-esteem - especially to girls who are at very vulnerable stages in life like puberty. Men can develop a distorted image of women and see them only as objects for their pleasure. Violence against women has been linked to the portrayal of women in the media also."
