The GOMC is a major part of MKT 595 (taught in the Spring Quarter), and is a fantastic learning opportunity.

In 2009, 2187 student teams from 57 countries competed in the Google Online Marketing Challenge. The global winner was from Deakin University, Australia. The team of Andrew Kidd, Richard Blakely, Kevin Fung, Clinton Hinze, Katalin Kish and Howard Lien was taught by Chia Yao Lee and Bardo Fraunholz, and worked with a local indoor play centre, www.littletigrrs.com.au.

The 2009 Americas winner came from James Madison University, and was taught by Theresa Flaherty. The team of Rachel Bruton, Meredith Rauh and Brandon Sockwell, worked with a local tour operator, www.mobiletours.org.

In 2008, over 1600 student teams competed in the GOMC. The global winner was from University of Western Australia and was taught Dr. Fang Liu. The team of Aaron Balm, Lauren Bobridge, Amy Smith, Victor Tsen and Arina Usikov worked with a local rock-climbing centre, www.thehangout.com.au.

The 2008 Americas winner came from Pennsylvania State University and was taught by Jim Jansen. The team of Caroline Furey, Joe Lewis, Matthew Maisel, Daehee Park and Tonya Podkuiko worked with a local tourism and information site, www.happyvalley.com.

DePaul has competed in the GOMC every year, with several teams in each MKT 595 class:

The MKT595 2009 ranking was:

I don't see any new e-mail in my inbox. Anything that arrived after Tuesday 19th January is hidden from me. The weird thing is that I can access these recent messages through webmail (or by logging on to a Windows PC and using Outlook).

Have applied Microsoft and Apple updates, cleared directories, checked settings, etc. All to no avail.

Hoping to find a solution soon. Having to use webmail is particularly irksome.

Technology Tuesday: Lecture Capture and Podcasting with Podcast Producer 2

The next Technology Tuesday will cover Lecture Capture and Podcasting with Podcast Producer 2:

Podcasting is also being included with and playing a key role in many institution's pandemic planning. In this presentation we will cover the basics of how institutions are using podcasting today, as well as demonstrate some of the options available for content creation and delivery from any type of computer and smart podia. Mac OS X Server includes a service for automating the capture, encode and delivery process - Podcast Producer 2. With Podcast Producer you create workflows to automate the entire process making this solution very cost effective and easy on the support staff.

David O. Justice died in September of 2008. The world is improved by his questions and humor. He knew what to ask for, and how to ask it. For some years he was my boss. He continued to be a friend.

CAEL (Council for Adult and Experiential Learning) has just published a series of essays on adult learning, inspired by the life and work of David. Some of my comments appear in a collaborative essay, expertly facilitated by Morry Fiddler. I think the series of essays work well in reminding us all of who David was. I hope they introduce him to a new audience.

Cloud Computing and CRM: The Effect on Sales & Marketing of On-Demand CRM and Salesforce.com

What is "cloud computing" and "on-demand CRM"? What role do they play with sales and marketing? What effect is Salesforce.com having in the marketplace, and why is it transforming so many businesses?

Join us on Wednesday, November 11th, as we explore cloud computing and its effect on the current practice of CRM. We'll explain how on-demand CRM - and better distribution of customer information - is changing the practice of sales and marketing as we know it. Finally, we'll probe Sales 2.0, show how on-demand CRM supports the integration of sales and marketing, and then pull it all together with a case study demonstrating the impact of Salesforce.com.

Speakers:

Kevin Turner, Principal, Model Metrics (one of the nation's leading Salesforce.com partners).

My colleagues in SNL, SoE and SPS are doing the same. I had not posted about my experiments here, but have decided that I should.

This week I decided to see how well Intelligent Agents could be put to use. Intelligent Agents are scriptable events that send out e-mails based upon a set of criteria. You could use them to send a gentle nudge to students who had not logged into the course for several days, or who had not completed an assignment before the deadline.

This is a great feature, but I did not want to send students automated e-mails until I had tested things for myself. What I did instead was to create an intelligent agent that sent me e-mail as each of students completed milestone tasks. This highlighted some issues that I would have to work through:

I received some spurious messages with this text:

{term not found: IntelligentAgents.Shared.emailConfirmationBody}

I am assuming that this is a mis-configuration on my part. I will investigate further…..

My spam/junk filter quarantined some of the e-mail messages. This happened at two stages; externally from our Postini service, internally from Entourage/Outlook. I had to manually recover the messages.

Based upon this information, I would use this procedure with Intelligent Agents:

Create agents from a tested template.

Ask students to add the Intelligent Agent e-mail address to their whitelist or address book (so that the e-mails would not be stopped by spam filtering).

CC myself on the student e-mail.

Overall, I am impressed with the feature. I just need to experiment with it more.

DePaul University has instructions (and an automated configuration utility) that will setup Exchange/Outlook e-mail on your device.

Instructions and the configuration utility can be found at http://iphone.depaul.edu

I highly recommend that you backup your both your iPhone/iPod Touch beforehand along with your Address Book and iCal Calendar. The default settings assume that you want to synchronize Outlook with your address book and calendar – you may not want to do this.
