The Livescribe Pulse Smartpen is a new device that your students may be using to take notes. It records both what is written and what is heard - and then mixes these two streams into what is referred to as a “pencast” (which can then be shared over the Internet). Each smartpen can record between 100-200 hours of audio. The pen is “smart” enough to translate basic text into several languages, as well as basic arithmetic.

Smartpens could be used as an innovative way to deliver lectures and distance learning classes. Smartpens could equally be used as a way to cheat in the classroom. This session will explain

How the Livescribe Pulse works

How the Livescribe Pulse can be used to record and share lecture materials

How the smartpens might be used in the future

The session will conclude with recommendations and best practices.

For more information or to RSVP please visit the Technology Tuesday page.

Curt Bonk Keynote on Livescribe Pulse

Curtis Bonk gave an energizing keynote presentation at the 24th Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning in Madison, Wisconsin. I have uploaded the Livescribe Pulse recording of “Technology trends opening access to education worldwide: Now, we all can learn!”

I was pretty impressed with the quality of the recording. However, I have noticed a couple of things I would like to change:

Typically I take a second or two to cogitate after I hear something profound. Thus, clicking on my notes plays back the audio from a few moments after something of importance has been said. It would be nice to easily jog back 10 seconds from that point (rather than messing with the navigation).

I wish I could charge/sync the pen with a mini-USB cable. I forgot to bring the dock to Madison. The pen’s batteries ran out at the end of the first day (a better battery indicator would be nice too).

The pen does not have a clip. If I set it down on a fat surface it does have a tendency to roll (typically covering the microphones in the process).

UPDATE: PDF handouts from the keynote presentation can be found on Curt Bonk's TraningShare website.

Full day of events at the 24th Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning. Managed to pack in as many presentations and workshops as I could following a 6:45 a.m. working breakfast (scary). Met many interesting folks. Filled my brain with ideas. Still testing the Pulse Livescribe pen here - unfortunately I neglected to bring a charger with me and the pen died during a Penn State presentation.... Somewhat ironic.

Curtis Bonk kindly agreed for me to share my Livescribe recording. This should be up Friday night/Saturday morning. Hope the audio came through.

24th Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning

To truly live up to its promise, behavioral targeting should be based on much more, including actual transactional behavior, both online and offline—taking advantage of an offer or making a purchase—and should factor in demographic data for the most complete picture of each individual consumer. This allows us to predict behavior - the holy grail of every marketer.

Tuesday and Wednesday of this week I attended the CAP (Commission for Accelerated Programs) Accelerated Online and Blended Learning Workshop in Denver. I used the opportunity to test a new gadget I had picked up – the Livescribe Pulse. The pulse is a ‘smart pen.” One of those devices that digitizes and stores what you write. The pulse also manages to record audio and link these recordings to what you have written or doodled on paper.
Tapping text with your pen on paper plays back what was recorded at that specific time. The technology is pretty impressive.

Unfortunately the Mac client for the Pulse is not out just yet but development seems to be taking place and there is the promise of rich third-party applications (OCR would be nice).

Anyway, I used the Pulse to record everything. I have started to upload and share (with permission). Moving forward I think this will change how I make notes in meetings and presentations.

The first is with Scott Cooper and Betty Wang. The second is with me:

1) Interactive Instruction Modules in Introductory Statistics

"The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate the viability of interactive instruction modules to support introductory statistics education and to deliver education materials.

Based in Adobe's Flash technologies, we will demonstrate the ease of using virtual laboratories to highlight statistical concepts. For example, in traditional classes, students are given the binomial, normal, and many more distribution and asked to accept these on face value. However, with interactive modules, the students will be able to build their own sampling distribution and compare the observed sampling distribution with the expected binomial or normal distribution and foster deep learning.

The presentation will include a demonstration of the following modules:

Sampling distribution of Proportions

Binomial and Normal Distributions

Application: interpreting the Vioxx data

Sampling Distribution of Means

Our goal is to package discrete modules with video tutorials and problem sets deliverable on personal computers, CD-ROMs, and on the internet to give students easy access and faculties the ability to monitor student progress."

Presenters

Scott Cooper is a clinical instructor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and a full-time practicing physician at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in the department of Emergency Medicine. He has given lectures on Risk and Statics to the faculty and residents at both institutions and at the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management's national conference.

Betty Wang is a Flash programmer with a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University. She has been with Educated Health Professionals for the last 3 years.

Date: July 29th

Time: 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Location: Dean's Meeting Room (DPC 7100)

2) Who Watches the Bloggers?

“The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about”. You may not agree with this statement but you might want to know what is being said…. Your students may be using blogs and Twitter to talk about you and the classes you teach. Learn how you can monitor what is being said on websites, blogs and Twitter

Date: July 29th

Time: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

This summer I taught MKT 595: Internet Marketing. For the class project I arranged for my students to compete in the Google Online Marketing Challenge. This was a competition arranged by Google in which over 1600 student teams competed to market a real company using Googles advertising tools.

The students in my class performed admirably. All created strong campaigns that demonstrated creativity backed up by data-driven strategies, appropriate market research and a willingness to learn and adapt. However, three teams excelled in the competition and ranked in the top 50 for the Americas region (Regional Semi-Finalists). I wanted to share this good news because I think it is worthy of recognition. The teams/students are:

Bark-a-holics
Business: PAWS Chicago

.MKT
Business: Lalo's Mexican Restaurant

John Carlin

Kathy Meus

Kat Seiffert - Team Captain

Lauren Young

Overall results can be found here. Excellent work by the entire class. Well done!

Some experts in the industry have kindly offered to be filmed for the upcoming classes. Ed Brill came into DePaul last Thursday and we filmed him against a greenscreen. We should have this footage converted to RealMedia and iTunes/iPod/iPhone clips fairly shortly.

I am really excited about having industry experts available to our students in this format. I find that there is only so much information that can be processed in a “live” class. Having access to engaging presentations in a portable, recorded format improves the learning experience. So far we have been lucky to gain the insight of:

Phil Gomes

Jessica Jackson

Ed Brill

Here is what CADM has to say:

In the ever-changing digital world it can be difficult to keep up with the latest and the greatest. However, even in the midst of so much innovation and adjustment, it is possible to notice some distinct trends emerging. Wouldn’t you like to know what these trends are? Wouldn’t you like to know Google’s perspective on them?

Join CADM on March 5th as Jim Lecinski, Midwest Director for Google, explores how these future trends are impacting direct marketers and best practices. Learn how offline and online can effectively work together, what it means to be “always on”, and how you can capture the “moment of relevance”. Mr. Lecinski heads up Google’s Chicago operation and has nearly 20 years of integrated marketing and online advertising experience, so CADM is excited he has agreed to share his vast marketing knowledge with us!

This evening presentation is being held at Google Inc. In addition to the program, it will feature lots of networking, appetizers, and drinks. Space is limited, so register today to guarantee your spot.

This event is open to the CADM community as well as guests, clients, and non-members.
