The Village Project Mission is to learn how families, neighbors, and other community members connect with each other and work together to meet children’s psychological needs, and to have positive impact on he process.

OUR MOTTO

Our motto“It takes a village to raise a child” it is a petty common proverb in this country. Many cultures no doubt express this sentiment in one form or another. Below are some examples from various African cultures. If you come across examples from other cultures please pass them on to us and we’ll add them to this page.

• The saying “It takes a whole village to raise a child” is expressed in Igbo (Nigeria) as "Obodo n'ezu ezu azu nwa" (Healy 1998).
• Lunyoro (Banyoro) there is a proverb that says "Omwana takulila nju emoi," the literal translation"A child does not grow up only in a single home."
• In Kihaya (Bahaya) there is a saying, "Omwana taba womoi," which translates as "A child belongs not to one parent or home."
• A Kijita (Wajita) a proverb states "Omwana ni wa bhone," meaning regardless of a child's biological parent(s) its upbringing belongs to the community.
• In Kiswahili the proverb "Asiyefunzwa na mamae hufunzwa na ulimwengu" approximates to the same.
