Overview of the program: DePaul University
offers the only graduate program in the area for teachers, and prospective
teachers, of mathematics that meets on the weekends and can be completed in a
year and a half. Beginning in Fall
2008, we will also be offering the M.A.M.Ed. degree evenings at Rolling
Meadows. Upon
completion of the program, graduates will have learned basic concepts and techniques
including • Circular functions, analytic geometry, differential and integral
calculus of one and several variables, numerical algorithms related to
calculus, implementation of these algorithms using graphics calculators and
microcomputers • Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry with an emphasis
on content for high school curricula and the use of geometry classroom software
• Discrete mathematical structures, with an emphasis on logic, proof, and
mathematical reasoning • Probability and statistics, together with an
introduction to combinatorics • History of elementary
number theory, algebra, and geometry • Topics in abstract algebra which
relate to high school courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
In addition, students study • Issues relating to the structure of
mathematics curricula
• Methods and current research results for teaching mathematics • Use of graphics
calculators and microcomputers as teaching tools • Selected software for the
classroom
Location and Schedule: Students
can complete the program weekends at the Lincoln Park Campus (Sheffield and Fullerton Avenues) or evenings at the
Rolling Meadows Campus.
Length of the program: Each weekend course at Lincoln Park meets five weekend days.
Each evening course at Rolling Meadows
meets for nine evening sessions. The program can be completed in as little as
six quarters or over a longer period of time depending upon the needs of the
individual.
Curriculum: 12 carefully articulated courses directly tied to
secondary and middle school teaching strategies.
Admission: The program is for currently certified high school or
community college mathematics teachers who want to upgrade their skills and
earn a Master's degree; currently or previously certified teachers in
non-mathematics fields who wish to change disciplines; and bachelor's degree
holders in other fields who wish to obtain the mathematics background
appropriate for teaching at the high school or community college level. If you are not yet certified, another
option is the T&L
program in the School
of Education.
Financial Aid: Some tuition support may be available for teachers
in Chicago
schools. The DePaul Office of Financial Aid can provide help with
graduate student loans, fellowships, and scholarship information. Call
312-362-8091.
