The International Studies major at DePaul was inaugurated in 1989 to permit students who enjoy learning foreign languages to combine advanced study of languages with social science. The social science curriculum includes economics, political science, history, sociology and anthropology. It has evolved over the years to form a truly interdisciplinary program that provides students with an informed and sophisticated understanding of the forces that shape their world. They understand the processes that shape our world: international social movements like nationalism, international legal conventions and binational treaties, international trade, migration, international organizations, and cultural diversity.
What makes this program different from other International Studies/Relations programs? The program is unique within the Midwest and beyond for its interdisciplinary approach to international affairs and its commitment to developing the full social and political potential of international civil society. Unlike conventional programs that focus on international security and international political economy, this post-Cold War program is oriented around themes addressing international political economy and global culture. While most programs focus on careers in government service or the for-profit sector, we concentrate on the non-profit sector and welcome activists of all stripes to our program.
Do you have a desire to play a more responsible and active role in the global community, a role informed by a deeper understanding of how domestic and international affairs interrelate? Welcome to DePaul University’s International Studies Program.
