  • Students will be able to identify aspects of diversity and the value they bring to DePaul University, the Chicago community and society.
  • Students will be able to define academic citizenship behavior and apply the concept both in and out of the classroom.

Faculty selected to teach in Discover Chicago and Explore Chicago courses do so with a commitment to the goals of the First Year Program. Both Discover Chicago and Explore Chicago faculty agree to support the goals of the Common Hour curriculum and the staff professionals and student mentors that are paired with them. Faculty members are encouraged to contribute to the success of the overall program by working to create a seamless environment between the academic component and the Common Hour. Some specific strategies may include team-teaching, an integrated syllabus, presence and participation in the Common Hour activities. Faculty members teaching in the First Year Program assume other responsibilities, which include advising and mentoring students during their transition to the university.

Staff professionals are expected to develop a curriculum that addresses the components listed above. They will do so with the goal of facilitating the students' connectedness to the university and their academic success. Staff will work directly with their assigned faculty and student mentor as a team for Discover Chicago courses. Explore Chicago staff will work closely, and meet regularly, with the faculty and student team, but will be responsible for training the student mentor to deliver the Common Hour curriculum in the classroom. In both models, the staff professional can serve as a resource and/or mentor for first-year students.
