Orientation to the City of Amsterdam In the morning, we will meet Professor Miriyam Aouragh, Oxford University, United Kingdom. She will give a talk on Dutch immigration policy and the transnational population in Amsterdam at NINsee Museum. After lunch will be take a boat ride on some of the major canals particularly the Herengracht (Gentleman's Canal) Keizersgracht (Emperors Canal) and Prinsengracht (Prince's Canal) lined with opulent houses in a variety of architectural styles built in the 17th and 18th century. As the merchant and bourgeoisie classes accumulated vast wealth derived from an expanding colonial empire, they built enormous canal houses to reflect their power and social standing. As the boat makes its way though the canals, play particular attention to the facades of the houses, their distinctive architecture and the use of decorative gables, doors, window designs, cornices and other designs. Part of the afternoon will be devoted to general orientation to Amsterdam. Important information about the rest of the trip will be also discussed. You will also be making your photographic presentation about public spaces in Chicago Group Dinner
