Combined B.A./M.A. Degree

In 2002-2003 the English Department began accepting applications to a new combined degree program that allows selected students to complete both the B.A. and the M.A. degrees in English in a single program. Full-time students should be able to complete the program in approximately five years.

Application Guidelines:

Applicants must be English majors in the junior year (between 88 and 132 quarter hours). The deadline for applications is March 1 of the junior year.

Applicants should have a minimum grade point average of 3.50 in English and 3.30 overall, and should have completed at least English 220, English 270, and one 300-level English course.

The application form requires a one-page statement of purpose and a writing sample. The sample must be a copy of a paper submitted for an English course, with the instructor's comments on it. Applicants are advised to consult with the Combined Degree Coordinator before submitting the application.

Successful applicants will be notified by April 15 and should consult the Combined Degree Coordinator immediately about arranging their autumn class schedules.

Accepted students will make formal application to the LA&S Graduate Program during spring quarter of their senior year, showing a copy of their letter of acceptance to the Combined Degree Program to guarantee their graduate admission.

The Combined Degree Coordinator is Professor June Chung, (773) 325-4089. Please contact Professor Chung for applications and further information.

Highlights of the Combined Degree Program:

Students in the program will take three graduate-level (400-level) courses during their fourth or senior year of study. One of these courses must be ENG 471, Bibliography and Research.

The three 400-level courses will count toward both the undergraduate major and the graduate degree.

Students who successfully complete their fourth-year courses and all other B.A. requirements will receive the B.A. degree at the end of the fourth year.

In the fifth year, students will officially become graduate students and will complete the remaining nine courses for the M.A. degree.
