Welcome to Chicago!

“Say Something Wonderful” will be hosted by the DePaul University Humanities Center, located on the university's Lincoln Park campus. The department of English, which houses the journal Poetry East, is also located on this campus, as is the university's largest library. The DePaul University Libraries will provide a number of resources for the seminar, including books and other media, a computer lab with Internet access, and the maintenance of reserve readings (in both print and electronic forms). The library has a solid collection of materials directly focused on poetry and related areas (e.g. creative writing, the teaching of poetry); my own files and bookshelves are also at your disposal during the seminar. Library privileges will be arranged for all seminar participants. All DePaul University buildings are accessible by ADA standards; participants with any special need should let me know in advance, so that accommodations can be arranged.

The Lincoln Park campus is conveniently served by Chicago's excellent public transit system, and is a short train ride from Chicago's downtown area and other exciting neighborhoods. In order for seminar members to take full advantage of Chicago's extensive cultural attractions, DePaul University will provide all participants with a public transportation pass for unlimited rides throughout the seminar period. Some group outings will be arranged, and participants are encouraged, on their regular three-day weekends, to shop, go to the theater, take in concerts, participate in Poetry Slams, and explore this world-class city both together and on their own.

In the past, seminar participants have found housing in apartments and sublets across Chicago. For this seminar, we have arranged for participants to live together at the University Center, a new apartment-style dormitory in the Chicago Loop. A short walk from Lake Michigan, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Harold Washington Library Center, this housing is a short El ride to the Lincoln Park campus, and participants will receive a CTA pass for unlimited use of the transit system during their stay. The Center will provide teachers fully-equipped kitchens with microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher and stove-top oven, as well as a recreation area, fitness center, outdoor terrace, laundry facility, internet access and free local calls; at the Lincoln Park campus they will find parking facilities and computer labs for their use, and to build community, I will join you at least twice a week for lunch.

All seminar participants will receive a stipend of $3200. A check for half of this amount will be waiting for you when you arrive, and the rest will be distributed about halfway through the project.
