The department includes specialists in all the historical periods
and genres of British and American literature from Old English poetry
to modern fiction, as well as experts in fields such as gender and
ethnic studies, cultural studies, postcolonial literature, rhetorical
history and theory, linguistics, composition theory, professional
and technical writing, editing, and creative writing.
In the past decade, faculty in the department
have published over thirty books, including collections of fiction
and poetry, investigative nonfiction and scholarly studies of subjects
such as medieval devotional literature, American love poetry, and
the concept of voice in writing instruction.
Like other DePaul faculty, members of the department
of English are dedicated teachers who enjoy working with students.
Excellent lecturers and discussion leaders, they provide stimulating
classes that encourage student engagement. Quarter after quarter,
courses in the department receive ratings above 8.0 on a 10-point
scale for teaching effectiveness.
