Master of Science in Applied Mathematics

Department:  Mathematical Sciences

Degree Offered:  Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics

Specialization/Concentration:        1. Actuarial Science
                                                           2. Statistics

Program Description:

The department offers programs of study leading to the Master of Science degree in applied mathematics in two areas of concentration: Statistics and Actuarial. The degree requires twelve graduate courses, [48 quarter hours of graduate level work] and two sets of comprehensive examinations. The courses are designed to provide students with the necessary quantitative background for employment in business, industry, or government.  They further provide a solid foundation for students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree in statistics, actuarial science or mathematics.

Days/Times offered: Evenings 5:45-9:00 P.M. Weekdays

 Curriculum: Twelve courses:

Core Courses for both Concentrations:

 MAT-451, 452, 453, MAT-456, MAT-448, and MAT-459.

 Remaining Course Requirements:

  1. Actuarial Science Concentration: MAT-461, 462, 463 and electives from MAT 455, 460, 464, 465, 467, 468, 470, 485, or 512.
  2. Statistics Concentration: MAT-526, 528 and electives from MAT 454, 455, 457, 458, 460, 464, 470, 485, or 512.

Comprehensive Examinations:

Part-I of the comprehensive exams covers the material in MAT 451-452-453, and Part-II covers material in the area of concentration.  The exams are offered twice a year, in the autumn and spring quarters.

At the beginning of the quarter when students plan to take the comprehensive examinations, they should register with the program director.  Students may get syllabi for the comprehensive exams from  a link on the director’s website at: http://condor.depaul.edu/~emoussa/.

Usual time to complete the degree: Two academic years for a student taking two courses per quarter.

Admission requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or related fields. Students from other fields should have the following minimum prerequisites: two years of calculus, multivariable calculus and linear algebra, a course in statistics and a course in computer programming. Students who do not have the minimum prerequisites may be admitted conditional on taking them.

How to apply online:

http://condor.depaul.edu/~lasgrad/

Application deadline: Applications are processed year round.  However, since it’s preferable to start in the fall quarter, applications should be sent on or before July 1st

Financial Support:  There are few available competitive partial tuition waivers for qualified unconditionally admitted students.  Applications should be sent to the program director before April 30th.

Internship/field experience opportunities: Optional but desirable especially for international students and students who do not hold full-time jobs.

Career Possibilities: The job market is very good for graduates from both concentrations.  Students find jobs at insurance companies, marketing research companies, banking and credit industry, local and federal government, and pharmaceutical industry.

Combined B.S/M.S Degree in Applied Mathematics

Promising undergraduate students may submit, to the program director, an application for consideration to enroll in the combined B.S./M.S. program.  Upon approval, students may take up to 12 credit hours of graduate courses during their senior year. These may be applied toward the M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics, if the grades are B or better. Serious students may thus finish the M.S. degree in one year after their B S. degree.

During the senior year, and for formal admission in the graduate program, students in the combined B.S./M.S. program should submit an application form to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences admissions office.
