Master of Science in Applied Statistics And Certificate in Applied Statistics
Department: Mathematical Sciences Degree and Certificate Offered:
1. M.S. Degree in Applied Statistics Specialization/Concentrations Offered: Applied Statistics Program Description: The Master of Science degree in Applied Statistics requires twelve graduate courses, [48 quarter hours of graduate level work], in applied statistics and pass two sets of comprehensive examinations. The courses are designed to provide students with the necessary quantitative background for employment in business, industry, or government. They further provide a solid foundation for students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree in statistics. Program Director: Professor
Effat A. Moussa
Campus where classes are offered: The Naperville Campus Days/Times offered: Evenings 5:45-9:00 P.M. Weekdays Suggested Curriculum: Twelve courses. Core courses: MAT
441-442-443 Statistical Data Analysis I, II, and III
Electives: At least two courses from:
MAT 454 Multivariate Statistics
Comprehensive Examinations: Part-I of the comprehensive exams covers the material in MAT 451-452-453, and Part-II covers material in the area of concentration. The exams are offered twice a year, in the autumn and spring quarters. At the beginning of the quarter when students plan to take the comprehensive examinations, they should register with the program director. Students may get syllabi for the comprehensive exams from a link on the director’s website at: http://condor.depaul.edu/~emoussa/. Computer Usage The department places strong emphasis on computation and is well supported with equipment and software necessary for research. The computer software packages used in most courses are likely to play an important role in the solution of the problems students will encounter in their places of employment. Usual time to complete the degree: Two academic years for a student taking two courses per quarter. Admission requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or related fields. Students from other fields should have the following minimum prerequisites: two years of calculus, multivariable calculus and linear algebra, a course in statistics. How to apply online: http://condor.depaul.edu/~lasgrad/ Application deadline: Applications are processed year round. However, since it’s preferable to start in the fall quarter, applications should be sent on or before July 1st Financial Support: There are few available competitive partial tuition waivers for qualified unconditionally admitted students. Applications should be sent to the program director before April 30th. Internship/field experience opportunities: Optional but desirable especially for international students and students who do not hold full-time jobs. Career Possibilities: The job market is very good for graduates from the program. Students find jobs at marketing research companies, banking and credit industry, local and federal government, and pharmaceutical industry.
List of faculty who teach in the program: Mohamed Amezziane, Ph.D. Carole Bernett, Ph.D. Timothy McMurry, Ph.D. Effat Moussa, Ph.D. Program Director Claudia Schmegner, Ph.D. Po Yang, Ph.D. Research Interest: Estimation theory and Modeling; Non-parametric Statistics; Sampling; Design of Experiments; Probability theory; Financial Mathematics, Statistical Education and Demography. Facts: Graduates from the program hold prominent positions in local businesses such as Discover; Trans-Union; Information Resources, The Allant Group; Persico; Abbott Labs; Hollister; Navistar; Harris Bank; Walgreens; State of Illinois; A.C. Nielsen; and Northwestern Memorial Hospitals.
Certificate in Applied Statistics Students who opt to take only a graduate certificate in applied statistics may take the following six graduate courses provided they had the equivalent of the MAT-451-453 sequence: MAT-441, MAT-442, MAT-443, MAT-456, MAT-526, and MAT-528. Prerequisites for the certificate are the same as those for the master’s degree program. Combined B.S./M.S. Degree in Applied Statistics
Promising undergraduate students may submit, to the program
director, an application for consideration to enroll in the combined B.S./M.S.
program. Upon approval, students may take up to 12 credit hours of graduate
courses during their senior year. These may be applied toward the M.S. degree in
Applied Mathematics, if the grades are B or better. Serious students may thus
finish the M.S. degree in one year after their B S. degree.
