With nearly 1.5 million immigrants, Chicago has one of the largest and most diverse immigrant populations in the country; for a majority of this community, English is a second language. In this course, you will explore the theory and practice of learning and teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) through readings and classroom discussion while teaching or tutoring ESL learners at a Chicago-area community center. The course will examine theories of second language learning as well as strategies and approaches to teaching ESL in a variety of settings, including community, school, and workplace contexts, both in the United States and abroad.

This service-learning course satisfies the junior-year experiential learning requirement for the Liberal Studies program.
