The institute launches its Young Professionals program for the 2008-09
academic year with a tour of DePaul's newly-acquired "14 East" Building
(formerly known as the Lytton Building). DePaul Vice Presidents Bob Janis
and J.D. Bindenagel lead our group of ten through the structure, which adds
384,000 SF to DePaul's real estate holdings in Chicago's South Loop.

Registrants of the graduate class, Urban and Community Analysis, travel
to see new runway slated for completion this autumn at O'Hare International
Airport, lead by the O'Hare Modernization Team. The class also made stops in
Uptown, the Park Boulevard Development, and the American Institute of
Architects-Chicago.
Chaddick releases its latest study, "A Kaleidescope of Culture: Measuring
the Diversity of Chicago's Neighborhoods." Researcher Lauren Fischer is
quoted in an article on the study in the Chicago Sun-Times and on WBEZ
Chicago Public Radio. Nice job Lauren!

Our Chaddick End-of-Year reception attracts fifty guests, giving us an
opportunity to reflect upon our programs over the past year, which attracted
representatives from more than 70 organizations.
Our efforts to support the upcoming Burnham Plan Centennial celebrations
crosses a milestone. We enlist the support of our 20th faculty member, who
will integrate Burnham-related themes into the curriculum.
The Institute research on airports losing commercial service is featured
in a segment on the Jim Lehrer New Hour. The segment includes an interview
with director Joe Schwieterman.

The 2008 Leading Community Change High School program draws to a
successful close, with CPS students from the Chicago's West Side presenting
recommendations to the newly-formed Madison Street Development Corporation.
The students had been meeting monthly since January for a total of 48
instructional hours as a part of the program, which is offered jointly by
the Chaddick Institute, Bethel New Life and CPS-Service Learning.
In response to rising sales taxes throughout the region, the Chaddick
Institute hosts a discussion with Jerry Roper of the Chicagoland Chamber of
Commerce, Greg Hinz of Crain's Chicago Business and Chris Brewer of Economic
Research Associates. 75 municipal staff, elected officials and academics
attend.
April
Chaddick Advisor John Hedrick leads yet another successful Municipal Design
Review Network session, this one hosted jointly with the Village of
Arlington Heights. Charles Perkins of the Village and architect Rick
Hitchcock weigh in on design issues related to suburban downtown
redevelopment.
Ty Tabing of the Chicago Loop Alliance leads a group of Chaddick Young
Professionals on a tour of Michigan Avenue between Millennium Park and the
historic Chicago River Bridge to illustrate proposed streetscape updates.

The institute features panelists representing the Lake County
Stormwater Management Commission, the Village of Frankfort and Bleck
Engineering for an in-depth technical workshop on stormwater management.
High School students from Chicago's West Side visit campus for the third
session of "Leading Community Change." The Session focuses on the
relationship between colleges in the city and their host neighborhoods.
Additionally this month, Program Manager Joseph Kearney delivers a
presentation to the "Tuesdays at APA" crowd, highlighting Chaddick's high
school programming.
The Chicago Housing Authority plays host to the Chaddick Young Professionals
and offers updates about the organization's latest efforts to redevelop
public housing throughout the City of Chicago.

February's Technical Workshop, "Leveraging Brownfields for Redevelopment"
highlights some ongoing strategies around the region to tackle
environmentally-distressed properties. Panelists Mayor Henry Vicenik of the
Village of Broadview, Gary Deigan of Deigan Associates, Greg Dunn of the
Illinois EPA and Mike Ohm of Bell Boyd & Lloyd share their perspectives with
around forty attendees.
Fifteen Young Professionals learn more about Chicago's "New Communities"
program from planner Doug Hammel of Camiros during an evening field visit.
Mr. Hammel outlines some of the challenges and benefits of incorporating
input from a variety of stakeholders in diverse neighborhoods into community
comprehensive planning efforts.

January
We launch this year's Leading Community Change program for Chicago Public
High Schoolers. 35 students attend the first session on January 26th, held
at Bethel New Life in West Garfield Park. The program will culminate after
six day-long sessions with student presentations to the West Madison Street
Development Corporation.
Forty municipalities send representatives to the Chaddick-sponsored
Municipal Design Review Network meeting at the University Club on January
24th. Representatives from the Ancel Glink law firm graciously share
legislative updates affecting design review in suburban jurisdictions.
Nearly 200 land-use professionals from the public and private sectors
attend our joint conference on January 15th with DePaul's Real Estate
center, "The Changing Rules of Mixed Use Development." Held at the Chicago
Cultural Center, the conference explores how changing market conditions will
affect the intersection between retail, residential and commercial
development.
December
Our policy study with DePaul's School of Public Service, “The Return of
the Intercity Bus: The Decline and Recovery of Schedule Service to America
Cities: 1960 – 2007," receives national
attention, including coverage on two national broadcasts, Nightly
Business Report and NPR’s All Things Considered as well as the
Chicago Sun-Times and WLS Radio.
Thirty five professionals attended our workshop on "Managing the
Development Approvals Process," which culminates in a vigorous discussion
about cutting-edge techniques to deal with the pressure many communities are
feeling for the rapid approval of commercial projects.

A team of Chaddick staffers and young professionals cook dinner for the
homeless in a shelter in Park Forest, Illinois (above), preparing enough
food for some three-dozen patrons. The occasion offers all of us an
opportunity to reflect on our blessings during the holiday season…except for
a certain Joe Kearney, who was there only to eat the dessert!
November
Eleven prospective Chaddick Scholars apply for the 2007-08 program. The
Scholars will participate in ongoing institute activities during the
academic year, and will be recognized upon completing a variety of
requirements in June 2008.
Over forty gather at Lakeview's Blue Bayou restaurant to raise money for
ongoing recovery efforts in New Orleans. The band "Hurricane Gumbo"
highlights a wonderful evening of entertainment.
October
Representatives from area Councils of Governments, municipalities and
CMAP attend a special technical workshop on the role of COGs in the coming
years. The discussion-oriented event attracts over twenty participants.
Professor Henry Tenedero of Baguio, Philippines lectures during a Burnham
Centennial brownbag at Chaddick. Baguio, which was also planned by Daniel
Burnham in 1909, is planning to coordinate with Chicago's celebrations in
2009.
September
Representative Julie Hamos (D, 18th) visits the institute to share her
perspective on transit-funding crisis facing the state with members of the
Transportation Research Forum.
Thirty-four professionals gather at DePaul's O'Hare campus for our
Municipal Design Review Network event. The network is an ongoing partnership
between the Chaddick Institute and the Scenic Illinois organization.
Two talented individuals—Lauren Fischer and Sara Smith—join the Chaddick
staff as part-time employees. Both are working on special projects,
including our review of the great milestones in regional planning over the
past century.
August
Our Institute assists the media on a variety of stories relating to the
nation's infrastructure after the tragic interstate bridge collapse in
Minneapolis.

Professor Simo continues to assist the Tulane-Canal Neighborhood
Development Corporation in New Orleans, and makes final plans for spending
much of the autumn term in the Crescent City.

Chaddick Institute receives coverage in the Chicago Reader for its
"One Week, One Neighborhood" program for high school students in the
Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood.
Our event to recognize Lake Country, Illinois, for winning a first-place
award in the 2007 Chaddick Development Control Award Competition receives
coverage in several media outlets. Congratulations to the county staff, as
well as to the elected officials who worked on the project.

Leading Community Change program for CPS High Schoolers in West
Garfield Park wraps up with final student presentations to the West Madison
Street Task Force. The four-month program was jointly sponsored by the
Chaddick Institute, CPS-Service Learning and Bethel New Life.

Forty municipal and private-sector participants attend a joint Chaddick-APA
Chicago Metro Section Workshop about Commercial Design Guidelines, held at
DePaul's O'Hare Campus.
Representatives of more than 50 civic institutions gather at DePaul for a
progress report on the preparations underway for the centennial celebration
of the Plan of Chicago.
A feature article on High Speed Rail written by director Joe Schwieterman
appears in Planning, the magazine of the American Planning Association
(circulation: 40,000).
Over thirty land-use professionals attend the institute's final Technical
Workshop of 2007 to hear about best practices for implementing comprehensive
plans. Panelists Michael Blue of Highland Park, John Spoden of Libertyville
and Jen McNeil of URS share some of their experiences.

Two dozen graduate students in Public Service Management show off their
research at a “poster session” in the Chaddick Institute that featured a
variety of urban-planning papers. Other students conduct research on the
extraordinary rising in the Loop’s residential population.

Chaddick launches its new "Leading Community Change"
program for Chicago Public High School students with the first of six
sessions on February 24th. The program is offered in partnership with CPS
Service Learning and Bethel New Life.
90+ attend the Chaddick-ShoreBank event, "Greening Your
Operations," which features best-practices for environmentally sustainable
facility management techniques

Director Joe Schwieterman testifies on federal transportation policy
before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit (January 24,
2007).
Fifteen municipalities attend Chaddick's January 31st workshop detailing
the effects of changing demographics on municipal planning and development.
Dr. John Koval of DePaul, Jim Cox of Skokie and Jacque Gourguechon of
Camiros participate as panelists.
The institute hosts a visiting contingent of Irish officials and
government staff looking to get a better feel for community development in
the Chicago region. During their one week visit with DePaul's Public
Services program, Chaddick provides a bus tour and a panel discussion for
the group.
Three Chaddick Scholars accompany Joe Schwieterman to Dallas, Texas
during his presentation to the Texas High Speed Rail Coalition.

Chaddick's Technical Workshop on Form-Based Codes in
Suburban Municipalities draws a crowd of over forty-five professionals to
the institute to discuss this new zoning technique. Panelists include John
Hedrick of the Village of Glenview's Appearance Review Commission, Carol
Wyant of the Form-Based Codes Institute and Kirk Bishop of Duncan
Associates.
Nearly twenty current students and alumni of DePaul's
Public Services Graduate Program participate in a Chaddick-led mobile
workshop. Stops include visits to Bethel New Life of Chicago's west side and
St. Anthony's Hospital in Douglas Park.

Twenty land use professionals gather to discuss some of
the challenges surrounding the successful negotiation of suburban boundary
agreements. Jim Testin of the Village of Plainfield, Dave Hulseberg of the
Village of Lombard and Phil Hanegraaf of HNTB offer examples and tips,
moderated by Laurie Marston of the Chaddick Institute.
The Chaddick Young Professionals visit with
representatives from the Center for Neighborhood Technology in Wicker Park
during an after-hours tour and roundtable about the Center's ongoing
research initiatives.

The institute offers another installment of the Chicago
Experience for High School students, allowing future planners, developers
and architects to learn more about our region.
DePaul Faculty and students gather at Barnes and Noble
to celebrate the arrival of "The New Chicago: A Social and Cultural
Analysis," a volume written by DePaul faculty which explores a variety of
demographic and societal trends in the Chicago Region. Congratulations to
Professor John P. Koval for his efforts to bring this project to completion!
Joe Schwieterman contributed a chapter on transportation to the book.
Women in Planning + Development wrap up their annual
four-part evening lecture series, held at Chaddick. This year's theme
explored issues related to food distribution and community nutrition.
September
Representatives from the Tulane-Canal Neighborhood
Development Corporation in New Orleans visit Chicago to be recognized for
their ongoing efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Assistant institute
director Gloria Simo organizes a successful fundraiser at the Cubby Bear in
Wrigleyville, netting over $7,000 for the organization.
Chaddick launches its Young Professionals program for
the year with a tour of several Lincoln Park luxury homes with developer
Chris Craven. Over 15 participants gather to learn more about the
intricacies and economics of development in the City of Chicago.
Director Joe Schwieterman facilitates the Lake County
Transportation Summit for elected officials, allowing those in attendance to
indicate some of the infrastructure priorities for their constituencies.
August
High-schoolers from seven communities in the region
gather for our inaugural two-day Chicago Experience program, which features
site visits to Loop destinations and discussions with high-level officials.
This marks the beginning of an expansion in our program made possible by
support from the Chaddick Foundation.
Commentary from director Joe Schwieterman about
transportation topics is heard on the radio programs "Marketplace" and WBBM
News Hour.
Our Institute assists in hosting a session on
infrastructure and transportation at the annual meeting of the Midwestern
Legislative Conference, held at the Chicago Hotel and Towers.

The Institute holds its inaugural "Young Professionals"
event for graduate students and others interested in enhancing their skills
in planning and development. The event culminates in a trip to the 17 West
Bistro, located in the historic Berghoff Restaurant building.
Our co-sponsored seminar with the Chicago Metro Chapter
of the American Planning Association, "LEEDing the Way to Good Neighborhood
Design…" attracts an audience of more than 90 individuals. Speakers include
Doug Farr of Farr Associates, Al Larson, Mayor of Schaumburg, Ty Warner,
Director of Planning for CMAP and developer Perry Bigelow.
The Chaddick Institute facilitates a gathering of
elected officials in Lake County to identify new transportation priorities.
The evening event receives coverage in the Daily Herald and other media
outlets.

Two classes delve into urban issues. Professors Ronald
Fernandes and Gloria Simo take a group of Public Services Graduate students
to the city of New Orleans for work with non-profit organizations there,
while students in Joe Schwieterman’s Chicago-focused class learn the finer
points of planning and zoning through classroom and a field component,
visiting such landmarks as Marina City and the Pilsen neighborhood.
At our End of Year reception, held June 9th,
2006, we recognize all of the talented students and professionals who have
helped us with our programs this year. More than thirty enjoy networking,
refreshments and presentations to our municipal award winners and graduate
Chaddick Scholars.

of six graduate students spend a day in the Pilsen neighborhood to conduct
land-use research in order to fulfill the requirements for becoming a
Chaddick Scholar. Their data is compiled into a data set to explore the

feature article—and the cover story— for the May issue of Planning, the
monthly magazine of the American Planning Association. The article, “Box Car
Blues: Community Work to Preserve Remnants of Freight Railroads," explores

Professor Gloria Simo returns to New Orleans with a team that includes 17
graduate students to help neighborhood leaders refine their grant-writing
skills. The Chaddick team reaches out to community development organizations
to assist in their efforts to mobilize funds to support the rebuilding of
areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
We
celebrate the completion of our most ambitious research project to date, the
book entitled “The Politics of Place: A History of Zoning in Chicago." The
volume, published by Lake Claremont Press, explores the effects of zoning on
the development in the city since the adoption of the first zoning ordinance
more than 80 years ago. More than 70 gather at the Cliff Dwellers Club to
honor the professionals who helped us bring this book to completion.

Institute's mobile workshop on the new affordable housing law, jointly
sponsored by the American Society for Public Administration and the Chicago

and tours of affordable properties developed by the Oak Park Residence
Corporation. Professor Gloria Simo moderates our lunch program, which
includes panelists from the Illinois Housing Development Authority, the City

More
than twenty register for our first technical workshop of the calendar year,
"Beyond Kelo: Reexamining Eminent Domain in Today's Challenging Planning
Climate". The event features a panel of prominent municipal and legal
experts who share insights about the enormous ramifications of the Kelo
decision.
Professor Schwieterman's perspectives of the region's transportation-related
events over the past year appear as an op-ed in the January 2 issue of
Crain's Chicago Business.

The
Chaddick Institute leads a group of executive-level officials representing
various parts of Ireland (pictured above) on a whirlwind, day-long
"mobile workshop" exploring neighborhood development in Chicago. Stops
include organizations in Lincoln Park, Logan Square and Pilsen. We thank
Professor Deal Eitel for providing us this opportunity.

A team of 16 Chaddick staff members and graduate students (pictured
above) travel to New Orleans for an eight day trip to assist the
Tulane-Canal Neighborhood Development Corporation, located in the city's
distressed Mid-City area. The team, led by Professor Gloria Simo, conducts a
complete assessment of the options available to the organization.
Our Annual Joint Conference with DePaul's Real Estate Center, "Suburban
Chicago Goes Urban: Trends & Pitfalls of the Retail Revolution" attracts
over 150 professionals from the planning, real estate and municipal realms.
Nine speakers presented throughout the morning sessions, offering insight on
the growing phenomenon of "Lifestyle Centers".
Our December Workshop draws a crowd of municipal managers and administrators
eager to gain perspective on homeowners groups. "Shadow Governments: Dealing
with Homeowners and Condominium Associations" features an experienced panel
of planners and government officials who share case studies and insights.Institute director Joseph Schwieterman is interviewed about safety issues at
Midway Airport on the nationally aired broadcast “All Things Considered”

Institute assistant director Gloria Simo accepts an
invitation to assemble an expert team to assistant a parish in New Orleans
devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Twelve talented professionals, all
pursuing graduate degrees in Public Service Management, are recruited to the
team, which will travel to the city in mid-December.
Twenty three registrants hit the road for a mini-bus
excursion co-sponsored by the Public Services Graduate Program alumni
association, the Chaddick Institute, and the Public Services Graduate
Program. Chaddick makes arrangements for stops at community development
organizations in Lawndale, Pilsen, and the near West Side.

Students from DePaul’s Digital Cinematography program
begin work on a five-minute documentary featuring the Chaddick Institute.
Laurie Marston, Gloria Simo and Joe Schwieterman all are interviewed,
offering perspective for film crews on current and historical programs.

Our first Technical Workshop of the academic year
explores fiscal planning in suburban communities, attracting 22 suburban
officials. We thank Steven B. Friedman for helping us pull together a superb

Students representing eight Chicago Public
High Schools begin work on our new Chicago Experience program, held on
Saturdays by program manager Joe Kearney. The course, which serves as an
intensive introduction to the principles of urban planning, includes visits
with a wide variety of professionals in the land use field.

Our Chaddick Scholars gather in Chinatown to celebrate the beginning of a
new academic year! We welcome everyone back to campus for a year that
promises to be exceptionally productive year.

Our photo opportunity with
the governor! Director Joe Schwieterman offers remarks at a special event
at Midway Airport with Governor Blagojevich. The governor used the occasion
to sign new airport-security legislation.
The Institute provides
extensive maps and analysis for a forthcoming publication, The Cook County
Fact Book, soon-to-be-released by Law Bulletin Publishing.

Twenty three students take
part in a special graduate class held at the Chaddick Institute that
includes field visits to several dozen Chicago locations. Students explore
urban design issues affecting the Loop and even enjoy the view from the
roof of Marina City, which looms large in postwar planning history.
Our Institute offers
commentary on the security issues facing our transit and aviation systems in
the wake of recent terrorism acts. This commentary appears on WBEZ, the San
Francisco Chronicle, Daily Herald, and other sources.
We say goodbye to our
longtime administrator Marguerite Crowden, whose services are greatly
missed, and our technical assistant Wu Xiaojun. We also began work on a
busy program for next year made possible by a generous gift from the
Chaddick Foundation.

The Chaddick Institute
recognizes nine graduates students who earned distinction as “Chaddick
Scholars.” More than forty attend our end-of-year event to honor these
talented young professionals.
Our Institute hosts a “Town
Hall Meeting” in Peotone to build awareness of planning and development
issues affecting communities in close proximity to the proposed South
Suburban Airport.

Twenty four participants
gather for our final Technical Workshop of the year to explore innovative
strategies to foster good subdivision planning. Our panelists include Ty
Warner of Will County, Patrick Tierney of Lake County and Dan Ungerleider,
of Cambridge Homes.
Thirty students enrolled in
Environmental Planning course (PPS 202) take part in a mobile workshop
sponsored by the Chaddick Institute that includes visits to the Stateway
Gardens mixed-use redevelopment, Pilsen, Northerly Island, and the Maxwell
Street area.
The Chaddick Institute offers
extensive commentary on aviation issues facing the region. Professor
Schwieterman's quotes appear in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, and
the New York Times. He also makes live appearances several radio stations as
well as WTTW's Chicago Tonight program.

Fifteen planners take part in the
Chaddick Institute's mobile workshop, Zoning for Successful Downtowns, which
includes stops at Park Ridge and Elmhurst. Our mini-bus tour receives
coverage in the local press.
Another "first" for the Chaddick
Institute. We host our inaugural neighborhood field study for our Chaddick
Graduate Scholars. Seventeen participants in a chartered mini-bus hit the
road for visits to Pilsen, Bridgeport, and former Stateway Gardens.
Professors Schwieterman and Simo offer perspective on economic development
issues affecting these parts of the city.
Assistant director Gloria Simo appointed co-chair of the editorial board
of PA Times, the practitioner journal of the American Society
for Public Administrators. Congratulations Professor Simo!

Chaddick hosts its first workshop at
the Chicago Center for Green Technology (CCGT) on Sacramento
Avenue, an event held in cooperation with Farr Associates.
Eighteen attend this morning gathering that includes a tour of
the CCGT as well as extensive group discussion.
Our
technical workshop on March 9 on suburban design standards attracts
registrants from a dozen suburban communities and showcases the exemplary
efforts of Arlington Heights, Linconshire, and Plainfield to foster
attractive development.
Our largest
group of high scholars to date?2 young scholars representing a wide
spectrum of the city's public high schools--participates in our most recent
Chicago Experience program. The day's activities include a field visit to
Millennium Park, where participants evaluate the features of this new city
attraction.

Our Institute receives certification
as a "service learning" center for students at Chicago Public Schools. Soon
afterwards, our coordinator Sarah Sheehan announces our new extra-curricular
program for high schoolers at a CPS planning event.
Chaddick finishes work on a new policy
study exploring the value of municipal "inventories" of land uses to improve
local planning and zoning. Our study, written by Eileen Figel, AICP, is
mailed to more than 100 local governments in the region.

Twenty six register for our technical
workshop on "Measuring the Costs of Development," moderated by Jacques
Gourguechon, the Chaddick Institute's senior fellow.
Professor Joe Schwieterman interviewed
on the national public radio broadcast "Morning Edition" exploring the
city's aviation problems.
The Chaddick Institute launches a new
graduate level Scholars Program, to managed by Professor Gloria Simo and Joe
Kearney. This program will include a "mobile workshop" through the city's
lakefront neighborhoods.

An audience of 205 attends our
jointly sponsored annual conference with the DePaul Real Estate
Center on big box stores in Chicago. We moved the event from
campus to the Harris Bank to accommodate the number of
registrants.
The
Chaddick Institute conducts a day-long mobile workshop in the politics of
planning in Chicago neighborhoods. Our audience: a group of 12 high-level
administrators from the Republic of Ireland. Our tour includes stops in
Lincoln Park, Logan Square, and the West Side..
Twenty four
planners attend our technical workshop on strategies to deal with the
non-retail uses in suburban downtowns. Thanks to Laurie Marston for
organizing an excellent panel!

railroad enthusiasts and historians gather for our Symposium on Rail Line
Abandonment featuring Trains Magazine columnist (and former editor) Mark W.

We celebrate the publication of the
Western U.S. edition of "When the Railroad Leaves Town", written
by our director, Joseph P. Schwieterman. Audiences gather for
presentations about the book in Missouri, Los Angeles, and
Seattle over the next several weeks.
We offer
commentary about the future of Chicago aviation at a Metropolitan Planning
Council roundtable held in Franklin Park. Professor Schwieterman is
quoted on the Midway Airport situation on a variety of television programs,
including CNBC

Our technical workshop explored
strategies for communities to improve their public hearings. We
attract 25 professionals representing 17 municipalities.
An audience
of 42 arrives for the Chaddick/APA Metro Section luncheon at our O'Hare
Campus. Our speakers discuss techniques to train members of plan
commissions and zoning boards.
The
Chaddick Institute embarks on a study, led by planner Eileen Figel,
evaluating approaches local governments can use to prepare detailed
"inventories" land uses within their boundaries.

We launch the new academic year with two
Chaddick Scholars commencing work on independent study projects exploring
municipal land-use and zoning topics. Their results will be featured at
workshops later this year.

The Institute announces
an expansion of its program for high school students during
the upcoming year due to the generous financial support of the
Chaddick Foundation.
Stuck in Traffic!
DePaul students participate in a pair of externally funded projects,
including one exploring long-range forecasts of the region’s
transportation needs.

attends the monthly board meeting of the village of Skokie to
give its staff our first annual development control award. Congratulations!

We say "goodbye" to five faithful graduate
students who have managed special projects over the past year: Craig
Laurenson (workshop manager), Morgan Bailey (mobile workshop), Jennifer
McClelland (award competition), Danielle Pleas (high school program), and
Tracey Burger (Chaddick Scholar program).
Word of Chaddick is spreading! Chaddick
Institute director Professor Schwieterman makes presentations at WBBM
New Radio 78 Business Breakfast series and a municipal officials conference
at the Chicago Hilton & Towers.
We are pleased
to announce that the Village of Skokie is the winner of the first annual
Chaddick Award on Municipal Development Control. The Village
has done exemplary work with a transit
oriented development zoning district since 2001.
May 2004
Chaddick welcomes its second group of high school school students for a
full-day orientation on urban planning and transportation. These young
scholars from the Chicago School of Agricultural Sciences, arriving by bus,
enjoyed presentations and panoramic views from skydeck of the Sears Tower.
More than two dozen students attend the Chaddick Scholar lecture on New
Urbanism, which included a Vision Preference Survey conducted by Land
Visions, Inc. A similar crowd attended our final workshop on the year
focusing on the role of GIS Systems in Zoning.

Twenty-three municipal officials
attended a special technical workshop the Chaddick Institute co-sponsored
with the Northwest Municipal Conference addressing Senior Housing in
Suburban Communities.
Chaddick Institute selects five finalists for its
inaugural Development Control Award competition.
Former Sun Times architecture critic Lee Bey delights
our Chaddick Scholars with a presentation on the changing character of
downtown Chicago.
The Chaddick Institute prepares an hour-long
presentation on the Chicago airport situation featured at the Illinois
Assistant Mayors and Managers Association meeting held on April 2.

The Institute charters a 24-seat bus for its
inaugural "mobile workshop." A group of 18 join us for a tour of northern
Lake County and Prairie Crossing.
Twenty-eight prospective Chaddick scholars visit Camiros, Ltd. for a tour of their downtown office facilities. All hope to be
recognized as an official Scholar in May.
Twenty-two registrants attend our Technical Workshop
on watersheds and wetlands.
The mailbox is full! Planners from 40 towns, representing places as far
away as Nome, Alaska, provide written feedback for Professor Schwieterman's
forthcoming Western edition of When the Railroad Leaves Town (due out in

Chaddick Institute continues offering special training for
local zoning boards. On February 2, we took our training "on the road" to
The Village of Lincolnshire.
We launch our new undergraduate
Chaddick Scholars Program under the direction of full-time DePaul employee
Tracey Burger. All students, freshman through senior, are welcome to
participate.

Chaddick Institute receives
funding from the Chaddick Foundation for special land-use study devoted to
Chicago.
Twenty-four attend our
December 3 workshop on Strategies of Successful Public Hearings and
Meetings, moderated by Chaddick advisor Steve Lenet.
November 2003
The Chaddick Institute holds its first annual
conference, a co-sponsored event with the Real Estate Center at DePaul
University. Held on November 21, the conference culminated in a walking tour
of State Street provided by the Chicago Architecture Foundation and a
reception at the newly remodeled Marshall Field Store. The event draws an
audience of 100.
Senator Dick Durbin highlights the results of
our 2000 study on highway-rail grade crossing safety (which we prepared at
his request) in a press release announcing an Illinois Commerce Commission
rail-safety initiative.
The Institute welcomes an audience of 78 to a
Sandhouse Gang presentation on the economic impact of rail freight on the
region's economy. The presentation can be found at www. reebie.com.

Thirty planners attend our
Technical Workshop on Tax Increment Financing, moderated by Than Werner,
City of Elmhurst.
Our largest ever co-sponsored conference on land-use policy! More than 170
attended our event on residential tear-downs in Arlington Heights held in
cooperation with the Northwest Municipal Conference and Illinois APA.

Sixty attend
Chaddick Institute seminar on effective ways for local governments to
manage and improve their methods of evaluating developments. This
event is held at the Illinois Chapter of the American Planning
Association's annual conference at Starved Rock State Park.
Students
in Public Policy 202 participate in a symposium on campus to discuss ways
to improve the urban environment.

Institute hosts its first "Chaddick Awards Reception" to honor
thirteen students who have received Chaddick financial assistance.

Institute holds workshop on Senior Housing attended by twenty planners in
the region.
Institute announces plans to launch "mobile workshops" in autumn

quality of life in the northern suburbs. Tentative
